November 22, 1963

President John F. Kennedy was assassinated on November 22, 1963. I was eight years old, and like most people my age and older we will never forget what we were doing when we heard the President had been shot. I learned the news at school as did most children. The Principal came in and solemnly told us and then we bowed our heads in prayer. The entire school then crammed into the only room with a television, and we watched, confused, saddened, and angry. The coverage of President Kennedy’s death is my earliest recollection of television news, and at that time his funeral was the biggest event to be broadcast live in the history of television. Those of us who saw it shall never forget it. There was no school that day, my Dad stayed home from work, and we all sat in the family room and watched the most elaborate and stately Presidential funeral the United States has ever had. This is a photograph of the slained President’s grave site in Arlington National Cemetery.

I was in the 6th grade. A day or two later, I watched on TV as Lee Harvey Oswald was gunned down right on the air. My mother had beenwatching “As the World Turns” when Walter Cronkite broke in with a “Special Report”.....”From Dallas, Texas, President Kennedy has been shot.”

  • Cora Wandel replied

Yes, yes, I remember that as well. So much happened that week and we as youngsters were profoundly effected by it. Everyone was. Thank you for sharing that particular turn of events with Lee Harvey Oswald. I get chills thinking about it. – Cora

Congratulations on your feature. Our teacher came in the class crying and we wondered what was wrong. Such a simple headstone for a great President, but times were simple and maybe better.

LIKE YOU CORA, I WAS IN SCHOOL. ONLY I WAS IN THE 6TH GRADE AND 12 YEARS OLD. THE “BITCH BOX” AS WE CALLED IT IN BASIC TRAINING, THAT WE HAD IN OUR SCHOOL, CAME ON AND THE PRINCIPLE ANNOUNCED TO EVERY CLASS AT THE SAME TIME ABOUT THE ASASINATION ON PRESIDENT KENNEDY. LIKE YOU, THE CLASS GOT SILENT AND SADDENED, LOTS OF KIDS STARTED CRYING, THE TEACHER STARTED CRYING. AFTER THAT, OUR CLASS ADJENDA TURNED TO POLITICS FOR THE REST OF THE DAY. I TOO WAS WATCHING TELEVISSION WHEN LEE HARVEY OSWALD WAS GUNNED DOWN IN THE JAIL. I KNEW RIGHT THEN THAT THE ASASINATION WAS A GOVERNMENT COVER UP. I WAS ALSO WATCHING 9/11 WHEN THE SECOND PLANE HIT THE NORTH TOWER, THE SOUTH TOWER WAS ALREADY ON FIRE, WHEN THE CAMERA THAT WAS ON THE BURNING TOWER, CAPTURED THE SECOND PLANE FLYING STRAIGHT INTO THE NORTH TOWER, I KNEW RIGHT THEN THAT WE WERE GOING TO GO TO WAR. NOW, OVER 7 YEARS LATER AND LOOK WHERE WE ARE TODAY. IF BEN LADDEN’S OBJECTIVE WAS TO RUIN OUR LIVES AND ECONOMY, HE MADE IT POSSIBLE. OUR OWN OIL COMPANIES WERE ALLOWED TO TERRORIZE US BY OUR OWN GOVERNMENT AND THE UNITED STATES ECONOMY WENT INTO THE SHIT HOLE. PARDEN MY BULLSHIVICK. THE WAR WAS JUST THE EXCUSE THEY NEEDED TO BRING US TO OUR POCKET BOOKS, KNEES. BOB :)
