Artist's Description

Around 1040, Lady Godiva, English noblewoman became famous for riding naked through Coventry. She lived in the 11th century and is mentioned in the Doomsday book her husband Leofric a powerful nobleman. Lady Godiva became a patron of the arts, beleiving they would raise the conciousness of the populace. She persuaded her husband to reduce their tax burden, He agreed to do it at a price. He pointed out that the ancient Greeks and Romans viewed a nude human body as one of the highest expressions of perfection of nature. If his dear lady wife truly beleived in her crusade then she should lead by example. If she would ride naked through the market place at midday as a celerbration of the perfection of Gods work, he would in return abolish all local taxes to his surprise she agreed
