Chateau Amboise watercolor painting
Built on a granite promontory over looking the river Loire. Charles V111 decided to rebuild it extensively, when it fell into French hands in 1492. He employed an Italian architect and three French builders Colin Bart, Guillauime Senault and Loise Armangeart. At the the time of Charles V111, an Italian priest, Pasello da Mercogliano, is credited with laying it out.
Francoise was raised here by his Mother Louise Savoy.
As a guest of the King, Leonardo da Vinci lived nearby at Clos Luce which was connected to the castle by an underground passage. He is buried in the chapel of saint Hubert ajoining the chateau.
Henry11 and his wife Cathrine de Medici raised their children here along with Mary Suart, a child birde to Francois son Francoise 11. Mary Queen of Scots later lived with her husband Francoise11 at Chateau Chenonceau but he died a few years later.
