Artist's Description

Today I seemed to be guided to Raise Awareness for some reason…

THIS is how I imagine TINNITUS would look if it were given a FACE…

My image was made in Apo 2.9.
Tweaked for color and shape…

I woke up one day in November 2004 with a Loud Ringing in one ear… It happens to be the ear I have been deaf in for many years and in which I have a condition called Otosclerosis which I inherited from my Dad. I called my ENT and made an appointment. I was sure they would clean out some wax and all would be fine.

Much to my horror and dismay, he informed me after all my testing, that I had developed TINNITUS and I would have to “go home and get used to it”.

WHAT???

Was he CRAZY! I’d like to see HIM go home and get used to the noise that had been keeping me awake and driving me insane for a week!!!!

That started my quest to find ANOTHER ENT who would help me… Same Tests… Same Answer!! WHAT???

After Six Months of Crying and BENADRYL to stay asleep, my husband had just had enough… He got me an Appointment with YALE Hospital and we saw THE BEST guy in the business we were told…

I was so hopeful he could help me. I would have Brain Surgery.. I didn’t care!!!!!

But, much to my dismay he simply told me EXACTLY the same thing as the other two… “Go home and learn to live with it. Make sure you wear your hearing aid!! It will get the world’s noises into your brain and the noises won’t seem to loud. Your deafness and Otosclerosis are the reasons you have developed the affliction.”

OK!!! Now I started my quest to prove him wrong. I bought every Book and Remedy I could find on the internet… nothing worked. I tried special diets with no help. I tried supplements which still did nothing to help. I checked the pH of my body daily and drank special water and ate special foods to be sure my body’s pH was correct… All this was going to help, the books said…

Well… the doctors were all correct… There is NO CURE FOR TINNITUS… 1 in 5 people have this affliction… When you try to lie down and rest and get some peace and quiet, the noise is louder than ever… There is NO SUCH THING as peace and quiet, ever again… My hearing test showed that my noises are at a Pitch and Volume much higher than most… I could have told them that… hahahaha

So in the end, my only help at all, is thru brain calming drugs and sleeping pills… which I hate taking… but I cannot function or sleep at all without them. And ironically I can’t function very well WITH them either! HA But I carry on and do my very best!

And now, SIX years later, I am managing to still Sing, and DJ my Clubs, thanks to Musician’s Ear Plugs… and I guess I have to say, “I am still learning to live with it.”

What is Tinnitus?
Put simply, tinnitus is the perception of sound in the ears or head where no external source is present. Some call it “ringing in the ears” or “head noise.”

You may be new to the experience of tinnitus, or you may have been suffering with it for a long time. Perhaps you know someone with the problem. For all of you, we have plenty of information that will help you understand and cope with this bedeviling condition that affects 1 in 5 people.

There are two types of tinnitus: Subjective tinnitus are sounds only you can hear. This is the most common type of tinnitus. Objective tinnitus are head or ear noises audible to other people as well as the patient. These sounds can be recorded using a sensitive microphone.

Pronouncing the Problem
TINNITUS is pronounced either ti-NIGHT-us or TIN-i-tus. Both pronunciations are correct; the American Tinnitus Association uses ti-NIGHT-us. The word is of Latin origin, meaning “to ring or tinkle like a bell.”

Causes of Tinnitus:
Tinnitus is a complicated condition with many causes, including: Acoustic neuroma, age-related hearing loss, certain prescription and nonprescription medications, exposure to loud noise, earwax blockage, ear bone changes (otosclerosis), head or neck injuries, Ménière’s disease, stress, anxiety and depression and TMJ (temporomandibular joint) disorders.
