Writing this is the hard part…
I have been INSPIRED to do so by my Beautiful friend here on RB.. Sherri…
Her story of illness and coming back from a big black hole has brought me here to tell this story…
Some of my RB friends know that my hubby isn’t well… But he is an AMAZING Man that keeps on keeping on, no matter what!!!!
A few years ago, shortly after he retired, I came home from work to find him pacing… and holding his left arm… when I asked what was wrong, he said, “Oh I just have bad gas…” when I asked why he was holding his left arm of course he said “It hurts”… I said, “Get in the car honey!” AND HE DID!!!! THAT was when I knew he was in trouble. Normally he would blow that off, and say… “Oh I’m fine.”
Well long story as short as possible:
Went to hospital. They kept him beause of course… as I knew, he was having a MILD (they said) heart attack… They wanted him to stay overnite for observation and decide what to do the next morning… Well next morning they want him transferred to a facility that deals with CARDIAC cases so he can have the Cardiac Catheter Test… (they do hundreds every week.. nothing to worry about, they said).
Reluctantly, he agreed and was transferred by ambulance… I drove myself to this SPECIAL hospital that would find out what damage was done and how they would deal with it…
He actually walked into that hospital…. stubborn, no wheelchair for him… and they did their TEST… Thankfully my daughter and son-in-law waited with me.. and the hour, passed, then another, and then another… My INSTINCT told me something was terribly wrong and of course I was right.
A doctor came to us and he was as WHITE as a sheet… He said my husband had CODED and they had spent 20 minutes trying to get him back… and that they were about to give up when they managed to get a blip on the screen… he couldn’t say how long he had been without oxygen and wasn’t sure what he would be like when he woke up (if he woke up)… He also asked if he was a Wrestler, because as they were trying to Intebate him, because they were losing him, he was fighting them and actually reached up with his arms and grabbed the poor anesthesiologist standing at his head and gave him a toss I guess… ha. I told him he wasn’t, he was just a very strong man.
My daughter drove me home, as I could not drive, my mind was whirling in so many directions. Oh Please Lord, let him be OK!!! What would he be like the next time I saw him???
The next day I sat beside his bed all day, and late that afternoon he woke up… he looked straight at me and said, “WHY WERE THEY CHOKING ME?”
Oh my Gosh… he remembered them intebating him!!!! and everything down to the last second before he went into the blackness… His MEMORY was fully intact!
He tells us that in those twenty minutes… he saw NO light… as some people do… but he tells the story this way:
The Lord and the Devil were fighting over me… It was a Tug of War… they kept tossing me back and forth, back and forth!! and they finally decided that his wife and family should still have him, and threw him back to US!!!
He spent the good part of a year, recovering from that ordeal and all that went with it, and every day we were both scared for a long time that it would happen again…
He is now the SIX BILLION DOLLAR man, with so much technology keeping him alive. I am thankful for the times we live in…
He sleeps next to a REMOTE BOX that sends every single beat, or misbeat, of his heart… so he is monitored 24/7… The Doctors office CALLS US when something is wrong… LOL as He is not even aware of it sometimes… I am a tad comforted by that, as one of the LEADS from his DEFIB to his heart has been RECALLED… so they shall call us if they see evidence that it is fracturing…
Today he deals with many health issues, Heart Disease (he has a DEFIB in his chest), Stage 4 Emphysema (and at the moment of this writing has broncitis which freaks me out), Diabetes (he is now injecting 5 times a day), and other issues which pale in comparison…
We try to live LIFE to the FULLEST EVERY DAY, as we never know which day the DEFIB is going to go off… when that happens he will have Heart Surgery that will leave him without much of a heart to function with and he dreads that day… So we have just purchased a 38’ Motorhome to TRAVEL as that is his BUCKET LIST…
Now this TUG OF WAR Image has a much deeper meaning for me, than the day I created it…
LOVE EACH OTHER, and enjoy every day my Friends… and THANK YOU SHERRI for sharing your story of survival and HOPE and Inspiring Me to write this story… Hopefully it will give hope to others and give them a reason to enjoy the day they are in!!!!
Be as Nice as possible to everyone you meet, because we are all fighting some kind of battle!!!

Magic picture, Debbie. You have my total sympathy for all you have had to and have to go through. I had my heart attack five years ago, another as they put me on the table in the Ottawa Heart Institute to install a stent. I am also diabetic, epileptic and a recovering cancer patient. I only wish I had shares in the drug companies that keep me ticking over every day.
I have learned two primary things since I first became ‘afflicted’ with cancer and epilepsy back in 1998, Debbie and those are ATTITUDE and SENSE OF HUMOUR. Without both of those, you might as well dig a hole and pull the sod back over you. But I’m sure I’m preaching to the choir. Oh yes, did I mention the Canadian Health System? I owe them big time!
I wish you and your husband well and hope that things work out for you. I will keep my fingers crossed for you, as I do for me.
Cheers,
David
You have been added to my EXTENSIVE Prayer List David… you already KNOW to CHERISH each and every day… Keep on my friend!!!! :))))) as I said: We never know what battles each and every one of us are fighting…

A very big, huge, enormous, giant PRO, Debbie. Our health system looked after me as well as, or better than, I could ever have wished at a total cost of absolutely nothing, other, of course, than our support of it through taxes, which make your taxes appear so small as to appear nonexistent in comparison!
Our system provides no coverage for drugs or dental, but as an ex-federal employee I continued 80% coverage for both myself and my wife for about $70 a month. All in all, we have a pretty good system, or at least it has been for me. You will hear stories of long waits up here, but they are mainly for ‘elective’, not life threatening, surgery, such as hip replacement.
I hope so much that the US will get a decent health system but I am very much afraid that big business, in the form of HMOs, is just too deeply entrenched and will be almost impossible to replace. But I sincerely hope that what Obama is trying to do will at least partially succeed, there are too many people who want and need such health cover.
I really appreciate your putting me on a prayer list, but I must tell you that I do not pray, in fact I am not a believer but I do believe in positive thinking and I believe that that can assist us to do awesome things. Hang in there lady.
Then consider yourself on my POSITIVE VIBE list David… I have one of those tooo!!!!!!! :)))
