Pastel Painting on black velour with NuPastels , Sennillier Plein Aire Pastels and Conte Pastel pencils. Would appreciate critique and title. I had a problem trying to decide on a title for this. It started out as a value study. When I look at it I think of the difference in a delicate leaf and a rock or bolder of stone. The smoothness of the leaf and the roughness of a stone make a contrast of texture thats are often seen together .

After a few days and a few comments I have decided to entitle this “A Fallen Leaf”.

Very beautiful work…“A fallen leaf on the rocks below”.

  • Thanks Donna……..I like “A Fallen Leaf”. The rocks indicate it was a hard fall…lol. I recently purchased a set of pastel with all the values. I decided to try to just do a value study as a painting. However, as I look at this I think it would have been more dramatic in charcoal. But, it was fun putting in all the shading etc.

  • Maybe I should call this “Depth”…….or “Deep”

It is such a lovely piece. I know it is hard to come up with a title. It will just pop into your head and you’ll say yes that is what I was thinking when I painted this….:))

Love this it makes me want to touch it! so soft

  • Thanks Valerie. I’m somewhat new to painting so I decided to try something different to help develop my shading skills and my understanding of texture and depth.

Wow, Helen, I really like this one!! Your shading is so soft and effective. The black and white is striking. The lighter leaf against the dark rocks really makes it stand out. The contrasting textures are lovely. I’m at a loss for a title but I do like the suggested, “Fallen Leaf”.

Glad you like it Carol. I took it in to my pastel class today. A couple of people suggested I make the leaf whiter so it will “pop”. The teacher said “Do not touch it”. It was a little different to use just the black and white pastels.
