The origins of Bungi… Pentacost Island in Vanuatu 2006
this was the first day of the tradition celebrations for the Yam harvest. All the men on the Island participate in jumping from a stack of timber and vines constructed in the shape of a giant Man. This is a ritual for the Gods to bring on an abundant harvest for the coming year. Whilst the men and young boys (aged from 5yrs up) prepare for the jump (they usually hit the ground!!!) the women do a traditional dance and the other men doin a chanting warrior style march. This particular day was very intense. As the last jumper… the chief, climbed the rickety structure and opened his hands to the heavens it rained.. literally poured!!!! and as soon as he jumped the rain stopped and a beautiful rainbow appeared….WOW!!!!
