“Sounds of laughter shades of life
are ringing through my open ears
exciting and inviting me
Limitless undying love which
shines around me like a million suns
It calls me on and on across the universe
Jai guru deva om”
(THE BEATLES)

The fields of Cosmos found throughout the South African Highveld in late Autumn immediately before Winter arrived were always a special source of happiness to me. I would walk through these flowers in the Benoni area and took countless photographs which I have used in previous paintings and which I have given to others in order to inspire them as well, even though it could only be a secondhand appreciation for them. It seemed as though God had thrown giant handfuls of marshmallows down to the earth to brighten it up before the winter starkness set in.

Using a phrase from one of my favourite Beatles songs seemed to be appropriate somehow.

I’ve used A3 Canson pastel paper and Schmincke and Unison pastels.

About Constance Widen

I paint because I cannot do otherwise. I paint because if I don’t I become unhappy and sad. Most of all, I paint best the things that filled and fill me with joy and excitement, like the ocean and waves which I no longer can see nor hear now. During the long winter months I paint butterflies, they are symbols of what it felt like to fly away to freedom. And all the while, I continue trying to achieve what Matisse wrote, “I continue painting until the hand sings” .

Perfect flower for this title …… I just knew there was a reason why the Cosmos are special flowers to me :) How wonderful it would be to walk through fields where they grow wild.

Beautiful painting, captures their delicacy and their strength.

  • It always was a wonderful experience and I have photographs of my small children playing in them as well. What I can’t create is their special smell :-) Thank you very much for your wonderful comment!
