“A child ran through the meadow on a sun drenched summer day
And then he stopped his play
And kneeled in a field of poppies.”
(Nina Simone)

I am impatiently waiting to see blue skies and fields of flowers again. I painted this representation of how I remembered seeing Dartmoor one wonderful summer, when the fields of barley and wheat were yellow ripe, and where red poppies and blue cornflowers grew in wild abandon. No matter where I am, I will always be grateful for that golden summer and to Shane who gave it to me.

I’ve used A3 Canson pastel paper with Schmincke, Faber Castell and Unison pastels.

About Constance Widen

I paint because I cannot do otherwise. I paint because if I don’t I become unhappy and sad. Most of all, I paint best the things that filled and fill me with joy and excitement, like the ocean and waves which I no longer can see nor hear now. During the long winter months I paint butterflies, they are symbols of what it felt like to fly away to freedom. And all the while, I continue trying to achieve what Matisse wrote, “I continue painting until the hand sings” .

Fabulous imagination, Stanza. To paint this from memory is very impressive. This is so beautiful, the flowers, the colors and the words are stunning.

  • What a wonderful thing to say Tori, thank you so much! I guess it’s partly a memory of a wonderful time in my life, growing and painting lots of poppies, and wish fulfillment! If I am unable see this from my window because winter doesn’t want to leave, then I need to try and create it on my easel :-)
