“Every landform,

every tree, every blossoming shrub,
crinkled slope, face or hill speaks to us

of a faith in what we hope
is time immemorial, for here

the how things are merge
with the why, and the results are both

stunning and subtle, enchant the eyes
as on days when the mountains

are swathed in blue and black,
rain spots stipple the lake"
(BRIAN TURNER)

I wanted to use this wonderful poem describing this beautiful lake on South Island and Brian has given me permission to do so. The day I finished painting it, the terrible earthquake struck Christchurch. I think this must be an experience of unparalleled horror, so I am dedicating my painting to all the people of New Zealand – we are holding you in our hearts!

I used A3 Canson pastel paper and Unison, Schmincke and Sennelier pastels for this painting.

This painting is a representation of a very beautiful photograph taken by Mary Ball, known to Red Bubblers as Gingermegs. Her stunning capture can be found here: http://www.redbubble.com/people/gingermegs/art/...

Mary thank you for your awesome generosity!

About Constance Widen

I paint because I cannot do otherwise. I paint because if I don’t I become unhappy and sad. Most of all, I paint best the things that filled and fill me with joy and excitement, like the ocean and waves which I no longer can see nor hear now. During the long winter months I paint butterflies, they are symbols of what it felt like to fly away to freedom. And all the while, I continue trying to achieve what Matisse wrote, “I continue painting until the hand sings” .
