Purple Defiance by Constance Widen

Purple Defiance by

For “A Fascinating Purple” :
“On the 10th day of Christmas my true love sent to me
10 trees STILL standing……”

“A thing of beauty is a joy forever:
It’s loveliness increases; it will never
Pass into nothingness….
An endless fountain of immortal drink,
Pouring unto us from heaven’s brink.”
JOHN KEATS

This painting of Jacarandas lining the road along the wine farms in South Africa in Springtime around October each year, has been so named because of the Weed Police call to rid the country of these beautiful trees. They will remain part of the South African scenery and are deeply embedded in the peoples’ psyche forever, no matter what draconian bureaucrats decide!

I used A4 sized Canson paper, with Schmincke, Sennelier and Unison pastels.

Sold, framed to a private individual in South Africa.

About Constance Widen

I paint because I cannot do otherwise. I paint because if I don’t I become unhappy and sad. Most of all, I paint best the things that filled and fill me with joy and excitement, like the ocean and waves which I no longer can see nor hear now. During the long winter months I paint butterflies, they are symbols of what it felt like to fly away to freedom. And all the while, I continue trying to achieve what Matisse wrote, “I continue painting until the hand sings” .

fabulous depth to this constance, and wonderful texture. I remember seeing these trees in Pretoria, always a beautiful spring colour… x

  • The colour is so stunning Linda, and their smell after it has rained is just awesome :-) Thank you for such a lovely comment, I’m glad that you have seen them at their very best. I also hope that the resistance against their removal continues!

Terrific, I love this! The Jacarandas are in bloom now, just as they were when I was a student in Pretoria! I can still remember the myth: if a Jacaranda blossom falls on your head while writing exams, you would pass your year! :D

  • Mariaan thank you! I painted it a couple of years ago after travelling from Bonnievale to Robertson on that beautiful flower-lined road that winds through the mountains and vineyards. I think we all remember that myth, even those of us at University in Grahamstown :-) I also remember the OTHER saying which was, if you hadn’t studied by the time they were flowering you were going to fail!!!!

I like the unusual and simple style, Constance. this scene, is beautifully fresh and exquisitely painted.

  • Thank you for that wonderful comment Colin :-) I had been moving more towards this kind of abstraction, but now I am back to depicting photorealism as I learn to paint this beautiful country that is so new in every way to me.

why are they being removed!?!?! i am truly puzzled!

  • The Weed Police have so decreed Linda :-( I have found that when politicians’ corruption is being uncovered, there is always a huge cloud of dust created to hide their misdemeanors!!!
