Purple Defiance
“A thing of beauty is a joy forever:
It’s loveliness increases; it will never
Pass into nothingness….
An endless fountain of immortal drink,
Pouring unto us from heaven’s brink.”
JOHN KEATS
This painting of Jacarandas lining the road along the wine farms in South Africa has been so named because of the call to rid the country of these beautiful trees. They remain part of the South African scenery and are deeply embedded in the peoples’ psyche.
I used A4 sized Canson paper, with Schmincke, Sennelier and Unison pastels.
Sold, framed to an individual in South Africa who saw it on Art Wanted.com and who approached me.

Linda Ridpath
fabulous depth to this constance, and wonderful texture. I remember seeing these trees in Pretoria, always a beautiful spring colour… x
Constance Widen replied
The colour is so stunning Linda, and their smell after it has rained is just awesome :-) Thank you for such a lovely comment, I’m glad that you have seen them at their very best. I also hope that the resistance against their removal continues!
Lynda Robinson
Congratulations! This is so lovely I had to give it an instant feature!
Constance Widen replied
Lynda thank you for the feature and commenting on my work! This is a great honour :-)

Terrific, I love this! The Jacarandas are in bloom now, just as they were when I was a student in Pretoria! I can still remember the myth: if a Jacaranda blossom falls on your head while writing exams, you would pass your year! :D
Constance Widen replied
Mariaan thank you! I painted it a couple of years ago after travelling from Bonnievale to Robertson on that beautiful flower-lined road that winds through the mountains and vineyards. I think we all remember that myth, even those of us at University in Grahamstown :-) I also remember the OTHER saying which was, if you hadn’t studied by the time they were flowering you were going to fail!!!!
Hopebaby
Very beautiful purple..deserved the feature.
Constance Widen replied
Thank you for that lovely comment :-)

I like the unusual and simple style, Constance. this scene, is beautifully fresh and exquisitely painted.
Constance Widen replied
Thank you for that wonderful comment Colin :-) I had been moving more towards this kind of abstraction, but now I am back to depicting photorealism as I learn to paint this beautiful country that is so new in every way to me.
toriyule
so beautiful
Constance Widen replied
Thank you Tori for your super comment Tori.
Cee Neuner
Great work!!!
Please consider putting this into the Which Way group
Constance Widen replied
Thank you so much for your lovely comment and invitation to the Group which I would really love to do :-)
Linda Ridpath
why are they being removed
?! i am truly puzzled!
Constance Widen replied
The Weed Police have so decreed Linda :-( I have found that when politicians’ corruption is being uncovered, there is always a huge cloud of dust created to hide their misdemeanors!!!
Rita H. Ireland
very very lovely work!
Constance Widen replied
That’s a lovely comment :-) Thank you very much!
Carolyn Bishop

How beautiful, I love this Constance…your work is a pleasure to view.
The jacarandas are in bloom here too, so beautiful… :)
Constance Widen replied
That is such a nice compliment Melanie, thank you :-) Jacarandas are one of life’s greatest pleasures and that colour is haunting – I took loads of them flowering when I lived in Brisbane. I doubt if I’m ever going to see them in British Columbia, but I can always make them come alive by painting more I guess?

This piece is beautiful and somehow got second place in Color Me a Rainbow’s Best of Purple Challenge even though it was not featured. I’m sorry to say the challenge placing does not count as the challenge was INVITE ONLY. Sorry!
Constance Widen replied
Oops!! This is a problem when one is still learning to figure out all this stuff on Red Bubble – sorry about that :-)
Taylor Sawyer
No problem! I sent you a message that should make you feel a little better! Hang in there! You will get it!
