Am I Stupid? by Connie Thomilson

Posted on May 02, 2011

Latley I’ve wandered over to You Tube and other sites and checked out thier tutorials. I open up my photoshop and and programs, pick my pictures and get ready to be tutorialized. It goes ok at first, but then there always comes this one step, that for some reason never works out the way they say it will. It’s either grayed out in photoshop or says “not available at this time”, or for some reason just simply does not work. Then I get on my search engine and go hunting for the possible causes of why this step did not work. Generally I don’t find anything. So am I stupid?

I’ve come to the conculsion it’s like Grandma or aunties recipes. It so good, so you say, “Grandma can I have that recipe.” And she gives it to you, but she leaves that one all important ingredent out because after all it is her secret, and no ones creation should be as good as hers.

Maybe it’s just that the writer or demonstaiter of the tutorial, believes that you know as much as he does. He does not add it because he just assumes you know to do it.
Well here is my problem if f I knew what I was doing I wouldn’t need to be tutorialized.

So I guess I need to write a book, Being Tutorialized for Dummies.
Or maybe I guess I AM just Stupid.

Connie.

Yes you’re stupid. Only joking :) Just ignore the tutorials and dive in and discover what does what… That’s what I do most of the time – then use the Help files or Google if I ever get stuck – and it’s worked out fine. Maybe the stupid way of doing it but less of a headache.

No, you’re not stooopid. Many tutorials assume you have the latest version of everything so do not bother even checking or disclosing what version they’re actually on about.

My level of overall disappointment with Photoshop tutorials is profound, and this is simply due to the universal inability of tutorial writers not to assume knowledge in the reader. For example, dodging and burning may be something a tutorial writer does over breakfast, but if a process involves it, then it should be explained as well.

When I write a tutorial I assume zero knowledge apart from knowing what a mouse and a keyboard is.

I too must be stupid for I was having the same problem. ;-) Wised up somewhat and bought a book on Photoshop. Try some of the discount book wharehouses. Found mine for only $6. It’s been a big help when something needs to be done in PS.
