In need of something more life affirming to do than cluttering up the house I decided to take a Sunday lunchtime constitutional along the Louth Navigation Canal. A more tenuously named waterway you’d be hard pressed to find, given it’s current state of less than romantic dilapidation…

One of the more insurmountable obstacles on the canal is Anglian Water’s flow regulating ‘tilt gate’ which controls the progess of the River Lud into the canal. However, the weir effect it creates has often struck me as being quite a nice abstract, but then I also love the first few minutes of Tarkovsky’s ‘Solaris’ which consists of a static shot of reeds gently undulating in the current of a languid river.

The white stream two thirds across the shot came courtesy of a duck standing on top of the tilt gate, probably wondering if the amadán with the camera was going to feed it.

Beautiful abstract, I love the blend of colours and the suggestion of light through a curtain (no matter what the real thing is ;-))
