I’m told that the one of the hardest things about night photography is getting up from your couch and leaving the warmth of your house once the evening sets in. I’m not entirely sure that’s true, but those who brave the dark and the cold can be rewarded with some wonderful images:
These works show just a few of the techniques and ideas that can be explored once the sun goes down. From light painting to long exposure, experiments with bokeh and the effects created by star and light trails, there’s plenty of inspiration offered up by the night.

I’ve tried a few light trails and, while they’re not very good, this is one of them taken just outside my front door:

Excellent feature Nat. I’ve shied away from doing much night photography so far, but now the winter nights are drawing in I’m definitely going to give it a go, particularly when you see from the shots featured what can be achieved.

Nat, many thanks for this! Night photography can be a lot of fun. And just to prove that you do not need expensive equipment to have fun, all of these night shots have been taken using my little Casio Exilim EX-S10 point & shoot camera:

A fun thing with digital cameras, since they don’t suffer from the reciprocity failure inherent in film, is to take really long exposures – , three, five, ten minutes or more – pointing the camera into what appears to be complete darkness – away from any ambient city light. The results can be amazing – blue sky, white clouds, green leaves, i.e. daylight clarity but with a slightly eerie otherworldliness about them.

The shot below was taken in my garden at 3 a.m. one morning when I was up hoping to see perseid meteorites. I got bored and aimed the camera at the garden. The shot was 196 seconds, and although there was a low moon behind the camera, everything below the horizon was black.

I love night photography – very therapeutic too, spending time setting up the camera and waiting for the exposure.
These are some of my faves:

Living in rain forest can create great reasons for wanting to do night photography … it is the best time to capture the phosphorescent mushrooms that can be seen glowing in the dark of the night …

Below is an example of another type of night photography which also involves light painting. This shot as well as all others in my Nocturnal Garden Series was made in a garden at night. The camera was set on a tripod, while I painted over the flowers with a small flashlight during a 2 to 5-second exposure, depending on the shot. This produces a well controlled lighting on a beautiful dark background.

Night isn’t the obvious time to use a pinhole camera, but nothing was lost in trying this:

Keeping an eye on the summer night sky at temperate latitudes (Scotland is perfectly placed), can reward you with scenes like this:

Nighttime is kind of the great equaliser : it’s not about equipment (because fast lenses are not a prerequisite, only a stable platform and good composition and, as stated, a desire to leave the warmth and comfort of your living room!)
