Red and Orange Skies
Yesterday morning residents in Sydney, Australia woke up to an unusual sight and for those who were armed with cameras, a unique opportunity for some amazing photographs. Images of red and orange dust filled skies have been flashing across news channels worldwide in the past 24 hours and some of our own photographers were lucky enough to have their cameras at the ready. To mark such an unusual event, we thought we’d feature a mini gallery of some of the images you captured:
- Sydney dust storm like Mars (BBC)
- Dust storm whips Sydney; flight chaos (China Daily)
- Dust Storm Shrouds Sydney (New York Times)
- Dust storm blankets Australian cities in red haze (CNN)
If you captured any images of the dust storm, in Sydney or other locations that were affected, we’d love to see them. Please feel free to share your images in the comments below.
See here for instructions on how to post your images in the comments.

Wow, was it a sand storm or something to do with volcanic ash from an eruption?
community replied
I believe it was a dust storm which blew in from the Australian desert.

Wow!! I missed the news; but thought this morning’s home page was one of the “prettiest” I had seen in a long time; although yesterday’s Eiffel Tower was hard to beat! lol.
OMGosh. A Sandstorm from the dessert? So the dessert is red? Come to think of it, I have seen those images of amazing red rock in some areas. Gorgeous images, all!
Thanks for illuminating the situation.

WOW! I hope that stays “unusual”

Newcastle City almost obliterated. I should have attended to the sat levels (the TZ7 tends to undersaturate) but you get the idea…

Just amazing!!!!

Here, in south-western Sydney, it apparently wasn’t as dramatic as in these pictures, which mainly seem to be from the coast. It was interesting, while driving around, in the afternoon to see the cars (just like mine) covered in dust. In 1967 and 1968, I taught in Bourke, where quite a lot of the time the sky looked like that.
I’m surprised that noone from the far west has written: “If you think that is a dust storm! This is a dust storm!!” (I did photograph my car but the dust was not very spectacular.)
Silvia Ganora
Amazing pics! I hadn’t read the news this morning so I thought it was a collection of images with orange filters applied..! We do get sandstorms from nearby Northern Africa here in Sicily (and even some black rain when the Etna volcano erupts, but nothing comparable to this! Hope the people are doing ok.
PPPhotoArt

what a delightful collection of beautiful images

I wonder how many cameras will be dust affected, that dust lasted all day and only blew away in the evening. the red haze was eerie to say the least an if the end of the world is like that, well…... even the plants were struggling under the dust.
Crowmanic
Most unusual and unique photo opportunity to be sure, though the where and how all that dust came about is far more concerning to some. I think they call it erosion, and millions of tons of quality top soil is blown away and dumped in the ocean, (regularly here in SA, Adelaide) due to the de-treeing that took place in Australia in the earlier years of ignorance.
Thanks for putting up the gallery…

We had a simular thing happen in Ballarat, Vic last year…it was a big dust storm spreading top soil from surrounding paddocks over the city!!
Awesome pics!!

I’m in Lismore on the NSW North coast and it was beautiful!

I took shots from my backyard which were so vivid – It was like standing in a bushfire. Unfortunately the lens was covered in dust particles! . Love the above images but the aftermath is yuck – my white house is now red, and adding water turns the dust to mud!
ForestGirl
I was in Ballina yesterday and took a number of images of the dust … here a couple of them … it was amazing light to work in!

Samantha Goode
Thankyou for showing 2 of my photographs here, it was such a surreal day. I only wish that I’d covered my mouth and nose with something as I’ve been coughing since! – I was just too caught up in the moment. 2 of my photo’s were shown on Sky News in the UK and are also on their website: http://yourphotos.sky.com (mine are 5 and 6)
Anne Hale
I saw this on our news. Wow, these images are amazing. That was some Incredible dust storm and I would love to see some photos from space. Will have to check out NASA sight.

When I awoke yesterday at dawn I thought my bedroom was on fire, the light was that red. The air was still, which made it surreal and War of the Worlds stuff, and when I went outside to investigate I realised it wasn’t the light – it was the air and everything. Then my daughter texted me from her bedroom to check out the sky (!) The wind came later to take most of it away to New Zealand. Driving to work and not seeing anything but orange from the top of Gladesville Bridge and then Anzac Bridge I could not believe anyone would take a digital SLR out to shoot the massive amount of dust. Great photos but gee ….I hope those sensors survived! The air was so thick with dust, we can still smell it and feel it inside our office a day later. More dust is excpected to venture over our way from SA this weekend.
pene
here in Mullewa we get dust storms frequently during the summer, when you can’t see more than about 300 or 400m in front of you and with howling winds and it all comes from farmers paddocks.
adgray
and it all comes from farmers paddocks.
and then we expect poor farmers to produce our food from what’s left!

LOL sorry forgot this wasn’t a forum thread! .... her RB perhaps it should be! =0þ

I do have to say…it looks pretty amazing. It’s lucky that no one has got seriously hurt and those with Asthma acted pretty quickly.
Photos from the country towns in NSW and Northern Vic where pretty amazing too. Their skies turned black like the night. I WISH I was there to catch a few snaps.
Hope everyone that was in the middle of it is okay!
Globalphotos
Surreal…....... shows you the state of things inland…......top shots guys !!
Joanne Bradley
Incredible, these dust storm images are just astounding! Can’t help but love that orange glow but so glad to hear that our Aussie friends are okay if a tad dusty! What an experience to go through! Is this a regular occurence or just an anomaly? That NASA shot is something else!
Bryan Freeman
Hi Joanne,
The dust storm was an anomaly. It happened about 6-7 years ago as well. Although, the storm yesterday was far worse than the one a few years ago.
Bryan Freeman
As for the dust in our cameras, well, everything at home is coated in a nice fine dust so my camera would have been as well. So, taking it outside was a sensible option I reckon. ;
)) Besides, life is for living. ;))BarbaraManis
Hmmm, now I know why someone thought I was in Australia when she viewed my Sedona images. I see some absolutely awesome shots. Great for photographers but probably difficult to breathe. Hope everyone is OK!
kalaryder
Unbelievable colours, well taken everyone and such a good idea to make this a gallery on its own.

Fantastic pics!
It was awesome, still trying to clean the dust off everything….someone might know the answer to this….
I had to go out yesterday and noticed through the red haze when drivers had their car lights on there appeared to be a blue light coming from the interior of the cars…really strange, just added to the strangness of the day.

Seraphina6
Such amazing and beautiful photography of such a strange phenomenon. I live two hours south of Sydney in Goulburn.. and while we had the dust storm as well it was not so dramatic.. but still cleaning up the aftermath.. my looks like it was buried in dust!!
Chris Capizzi
Awesome images.

I woke up at 5.30am after little sleep and thought “hmm i must be dreaming, the world has turned sepia” Leaving for work I felt an eerie calmess, that turned into roaring winds. We had calls from many concerned parents ‘Is school still open?’ Indeed it was and we spent the day with the kids who braved leaving the house in a semi-lockdown situation, confined to our classrooms all day. Weird day all round. Then returned to a funky 70’s design trend, an orange kitchen. #@x%x! Why did I leave my windows open !!
AYYA
oh really scary, I hope it will end quickly…...

wow cool photo from above!!

Would have been an experince that’s for sure! Great images too by the way!
