Today’s inspiration post comes with a small disclaimer. I’ve been wanting to do a post on abstract art for a while but it’s one of those genres that can appear complex to those who aren’t well versed with the theory or history behind it. My technical knowledge is limited but I’m hoping a few more experienced abstract artists on RedBubble will jump in on the comments below and give us their take on why they love this style and what these works mean to them.
Abstract art is generally understood to mean art that uses colour and form in a non-realistic way. Abstracts generally fall into one of two catagories, Abstract Expressionism and Representational or Abstract Realism. Abstract Expressionism describes art color and form in a non-representational way, where as Abstract Realism describe art that portrays recognisable subject matter in an abstract way. If you’re interested in learning more, the following links are a good place to start.

We have a number of wonderfully talented abstract artists on RedBubble:
If you’re interested in exploring more abstract art, the following groups feature some amazing talent:
- Abstract Realism
- Digital Abstracts & Patterns
- Abstracts from Nature
- Landscape and Abstract Photography
- Mysteries of the Common
- Abstract Macro Urban Art
We’d love you to share your favourite RedBubble abstract works with us in the comments below. We’d also welcome any abstract artists to comment in a bit more detail about the genre, the way they work or their influences. If you have any questions about abstract art, you’re welcome to post them below.

Here are a few of mine. I couldn’t begin to explain how i came to do abstract art, all i know is that you have to feel it, it can’t be structured and can’t follow specific rules… It just is …
Well for me anyway

Nat, what beautiful abstract images you have put together.
To me abstract art is so much more than filling a ‘canvas’ with representation marks. It is so much more about colour and composition. If the image does not have those qualities then it just wont work.
When the balance is captured correctly the result on the observer is an emotion one.
You have chosen some brilliant artists no matter what tools they use to create.
Karin Taylor
I love abstract art, but know nothing at all about the theory…. I get an emotional response and enjoy it thoroughly…. It is wonderful for gentle contemplation and relaxation… All the above images are just wonderful!! Thx for drawing our attention to the abstract Nat… What an abundance of beauties :))
Agnes McGuinness

I feel that I am less abstract than I thought after going through all alot of what you have posted here,
Truly it is an area that I have much to learn about and perhaps even more to grown in as far as my photographic sight can see. This has been quite helpful and perhaps I will be utilizing alot of what you have here to be a lot more experimental Thanks for posting this ;O)

“WEDDING RINGS”
“DON’T WORRY, BE HAPPY”
A Not-So-Lost Alternative Abstract Form:
These two have been “Kaleidoscoped” from recognizable things to non-recognizable. See the Group: A Krazy Kaleidoscope if you’re interested. (DON’T WORRY has also been “warped” to show edge movement.) They’re from an original photo and an original drawing of mine. It can take hours and hours to complete the kaleidoscopes and that’s after selecting the photo or painting that will be used.

some wonderful work on here, what a clever bunch of artists we have.

In a shameless plug for self-promotion, I wrote a tutorial this week on URBAN ABSTRACTION for the ROUND TABLE FORUM in the PHOTOGRAPHY CRITIC & ADVICE GROUP
Check it out!

Honored that one of my pieces has been chosen as an example of abstract art – thank you. Sometimes removing all traces of reality doesn’t mean that nothing is left – push on celebrating this topic – my compliments for promoting and cross-promoting all forms of art.
Anita Inverarity
Beautiful choices diplayed here. I love how in abstact work you can really wander and let your mind and emotions fill in the blanks- such immediate and responsive art. I admire people who work this way (polar opposite to what I do).
I really love this artist….

Wonderful work going on here. Abstract is such fun to do. Love it

Thankyou for featuring my work here. Cheers

Love this article, I have learnt a lot about abstraction here

Well abstract comes from the heart and soul. It’s not just what you see with your eyes and brain but what you see with your mind and imagination, what your muse sees…
Abstract is a difficult genre because sometimes people can’t feel or see what the artist can and it makes it difficult for them to understand…
But if they look at it with an open heart they’ll feel the passion from the colors, be able to follow the soft swirls or jagged edges of the lines and understand them.
Just because it doesn’t make an obvious picture doesn’t mean it doesn’t show something.
I love abstract and sometimes i feel that abstract shows much more than a simple painting of what is seen with the eyes.
Of course all the genres have their quirks ;)
Love the work i can see very nice
Keep it up!
Martin Dingli
Can someone explain to me, if on can, in simple English how does one post an example of there art here.I am using firefox as my webbrowser. Thank you.

Thanks so much for using one of my works. I am honoured.
To continue the discussion on abstraction I have put here a section of an interview in a fellow redbubblers blog, in case it gives an insight into the way at least one abstract mind works!
Q: Your paintings are very cerebral – they reflect a pace in the mind rather than a physical place. What comes first, the thought or the painting? or do they evolve together?
This is a difficult question to answer and any response is more an exploration than a definitive answer. Often the thought, or the general theme, comes first. Usually this thought is elusive and difficult to pin down. so I will write copiously trying to capture it. Sometimes, when all the elements are out in the open, I will then try to identify the essence of what I want to capture by writing it in haiku form. This strips away all the fluff and leaves me with a very clear direction to follow. However, I don’t always use that tool. At other times I start with the elusive thoughts still wandering freeform.
When I paint I am often guided by the sensations within my body. When I feel it in my heart, in my stomach, in my hands – even in my mouth – then I know that the painting is working for me. It is a deeply visceral, even primitive feeling. It is only later that I step back and analyse it, refine it, work ‘by the rules’. Initially though, I gather the awareness of what I wish to convey within my body, observe my physical, emotional and intellectual reaction, and then endeavour to give it expression through paint.
Regardless of the way in which I start, the painting itself often tells me more about my initial intentions as it evolves. Sometimes it is only when I have finished that I fully understand what my intentions were. I enjoy allowing the painting to guide me.
Fee Dickson’s blog is very informative, she is an excellent interviewer and regualry features red bubble aritsts.
