Inspiration: Design/Photography Hybrids
Today’s inspiration post looks at hybrids. No, not the cars which won’t do over 40 on the motorway … we’re talking about images that combine photography with art, illustration, typography or design. This is also going to be the theme for our first Monthly Project.
These hybrid images are the result of taking a photograph and adding an extra detail or two. It could be as simple as adding a handwritten message or a small graphic element. The key is that your image should retain as many of the original photographic qualities as possible. Examples include:
Adding handwriting or type to an image:
Adding some small graphic details:
Adding a character or object to a scene:

Campo by Relleno De Mono, Police/Monster by blindmonk, photo doodling by leonian and Learning to live with the stone by elsilencio
Tutorials and Resources
The following links should give you some ideas if you’d like to give this a go yourself. As we said above, Photoshop and other photo manipulation software isn’t essential. Drawing straight on to a photograph is just as effective.

About the Monthly Project
This post has been published along with a challenge which should appear in your activity monitors in the not too distant future. The idea is to get bubblers to put some time aside to produce a new work and to try a new technique. It’s about stretching yourself creatively and stepping outside of your comfort zone. As this project involves photography and design it could be a perfect excuse to knock on a neighbouring artist’s door to ask if they’d be interested in a collaboration.
Over to you …
We’d love to see your favourite art/design/photography hybrid images from RedBubble and beyond. If you’re giving the project a try, please feel free to post your results below. Good luck!

I would like to try this.
Is entering more than on work frowned upon or welcomed?
community replied
Hi Buck … the actual challenge will only allow one entry but you can change your mind as many times as you like. You’re also welcome to post more than one here!

Just a reminder to those entering work – we’re looking for brand new images which you’ve created just for this project. You’ve got the rest of the month so it’s a good excuse to put aside some time to work on something new!

this is going to be fun .. something new for me to try (big smile) ...
do have a suggestion … I know many people here use PS but there are many of us too that are using Gimp because we’re either poor as church mice or prefer it … so could you, when you’re suggesting tutorials and help, perhaps add some for Gimp when they are available (big smile)

Ohh, I love this type of thing, even though my own attempts have been somewhat limited.
I did these in collaboration with Belinda Leopold
It tuely is harder than it seems to blend Illustration & photography together, but the results can be quite fascinating..
Marilyn Brown
Scott those images are simply fantastic!

When I saw this journal entry I immediately thought of this image …

Question. Would a rubric, an image depicting a play on words (such as “melancholy baby” = “a melon + a collie + a baby”) qualify? And, would a photo of a drawing qualify, or must it be an image of some other concrete thing (like a melon or collie-dog)? Must it have recognizable language characters, would numerals do? Just exploring possibilities. Any hints?
