CHA over Harry Wright Lake by Paul Gitto

A Circumhorizon Arc bursts forth in brightness and color, over a lake in the pristine Pine Barrens of New Jersey. Beautiful Harry Wright Lake in Whiting New Jersey during June, 2008.

A hot Spring day, feels like Summer. Bathers in the lake are oblivious to the beautiful sky above them.

What a great find, talk about being the right place at the right time. Awesome work on this, Cometman. Thank you for sharing with us what a Cicumhorizon Arc is, I would have never known that, now I’ll be looking for them. :)

  • Thanks, actually I drove over from my house to get this photo.
I had seen a few CHA’s this summer and got creative this day, and wanted to vary the scenery.

Yep, I’m going to be tripping over stuff left and right looking for one of these photograph now. LOL My Doctor will be sending you a Christmas card this year !! LOL

  • Mike,
    These are quite infrequent

At 40deg North they are somewhat more common than once every ten years.
It’s by the grace of God, that I got to see them on six different occasions this year. Time is running out, as the Sun is getting lower each day now.
But I keep looking! Keep looking up and I’m sure you’ll get to see them!

Beautiful framing and the CHA is the proverbial icing on a lovely shot. We get a lot of “sun dogs” in our area. Not sure if there is anything in common with CHAs though.

  • Thank you John!
They are somewhat similar. They are both are formed from plate ice crystals; but they differ on how the light passes through the crystals.
