The Journey Begins - On an Angel's Wing

This is my first photo and view of a Circumhorizon Arc July 22, 2007 1:54PM It had begun a wonderful journey of exploration, understanding, and photography of Atmospheric Optics .

I would like to thank Lori Peters and KJ Gordon for noticing the Angel similarities, before I did!

How beautiful, Paul. The cloud looks like an angel passing by. The rainbow effect in the cloud is gorgeous. xx

I don’t see those effects in Australia. But I did see the moon split into 2 pieces by a cloud and the optics of that, one strange night ! No camera on hand, though.

  • Paul Gitto replied

Now that you’re approaching summer there, keep an eye out for them when cirrus clouds are present and close to high noon.
46 deg below Sun. My website has more info.

Interesting – I’ll see if I can get a few shots when I spot it happening ! Thanks !

I saw two of these in the sky the other day, one to the west of the sun and one to the east, unfortunately I wasn’t able to get any photos of them. Nice capture :)

  • Paul Gitto replied

Actually what you saw were Sun Dogs or parhelia they are also formed by ice crystals. Those are best seen when the Sun is 22 deg above horizon with cirrus clouds present.

I also saw a Mock Sun about 2 weeks ago, it was a little freeky.

  • Paul Gitto replied

There are a lot of cool atmospheric optic events in the sky!
    Ya just have to look!
