A Hero's Mother

Faster beats my heart
Faster, faster
Thumping in my head
Blood rushing
like a thousand whitewater rivers
Stone cold go my hands
Cold like winter headstones
A locomotive roar blasts throuh my ears
deafening me to utter silence
Mute, I stand to move
If only I could run back in time
Back to his childhood
Flashes of distorted thoughts,
warbled ideas that must mean
I’m going insane invade my conciousness
For this cannot be
It must be a dream
No, a nightmare for certain
Finally I hear the words
Nasty, evil words!
The chaplain says “hero”
As I crumble to the floor
Knowing my world has ended
And wail the gutteral earth cry
That mothers have had
Since time begain
For their fallen sons.
