Hustle bustle too and fro
Cathy’s coming now you know
with her baby Oh so sweet
precious Rhea tiny feet
Chris will come with them as well
I’m excited can’t you tell
month has gone I don’t know where
rushing here and rushing there
Cathy Chris and Rhea left
Moved to Tassy I’m bereft
house is lonely quiet at last
phone is ringing talking fast
Niki’s coming Gerard too
staying with us month or two
Christmas soon a happy time
get your ndinner stand in line
making plans to move away
they’ll be going saturday
Sundays come the house is still
feeling calm that is until
I realise tomorrow brings
Japanese student and her things
r4ushing round to fix her room
make her welcome month will zoom
Naoko came and fitted well
lovely girl with lots to tell
going here and rushing there
trips and shopping everywhere
month has finished time to go
Naoko’s crying feelings show
sitting quietly cup of tea
granddaughter upon my knee
open letter now its read
Niki’s coming back it said
not for long month or two
work in Sydney join the queue
three months later Niki’s gone
going north her face just shone
Niki’s happy I am too
nothing more for me to do
phone is ringing children say
Lena’s coming from USA
Airports busy planes fly in
people rushing such a din
eyes are searching for her flight
there is Lena face is bright
tears are rolling hug and kiss
finding suitcase giving gift
Lena’s looking traveling round
job she’s searching northward bound
Linda’s pregnant nearly due
this one joins the other two
babysitting moving house
Susan’s got the cat and mouse
Linda too is moving in
Bianca Sarah oh and Glen
finished shopping drivie along
nagging feeling somethings wrong
car in driveway and Oh despair
another student in my care
Akiko Lena Linda’s here
Glen Bianca and Oh dear
Jameela Aysha Sarah too
now I have so much to do
house is buzzing plenty noise
lots of meals and kids with toys
phone is ringing its my son Dru
based in England he is blue
missing all the family life
wants me to visit I’m in strife
Robbie called to say hello
can we take him to the snow
ten months now gone since I had peace
sometimes wish it all would cease
then I see their happy face
beaming since they’re in this place
now I know my job is done
I’m sitting smiling in the sun

Valerie, what an incredible job you have done for your children!!!!! And not satisfied with your NINE, you welcomed exchange students!!!! No wonder you take lots of ‘me’ time now with photography! Your poem gives a great picture! ;-))

A large family is HARD work but the benefits by far out weigh the cost/fights/screams/arguments, etc, etc, etc…..I grew up in a very large extended family (my grandparents raised me) Valerie and admire the hard work and committment its take…...I enjoyed reading this I had images straight away of my own childhood…..thank you. Mel
