Jewels in the crown- Tragopogon porrifolius- Salsify by Coloursofnature
This is a shot of my beautiful dandelion. I sprayed it with water to enhance its appearance. I wanted to show the detail in this amazing weed which we don’t even cast a second glance at. It has a spectacular purple flower, shown opposite. It took me 15months to find the name of this wonderful plant. I used my Kodak Z8612IS camera for the original shot. Herb to 1 m high with long taproot. Longevity to 2 years.
Flowers: Pale – deep purple, October – January.
Fruit: Achene to 15 mm long, with plumose pappus 15 – 25 mm long.
Seed: Wind dispersed.
Ecology
Native to Europe and Asia.
Weed of roadsides and grasslands
Occasional weed of grasslands at Mount Annan Botanic Garden
