The Dhow packer by Colombe Cambourne
Clear

I painted this portrait from a photo by Michiel De Lange (look him up here on Red Bubble). Many thanks Michiel for allowing me to do this.

Pastels (Unison) & pastel pencils (Derwent & Stabilo) on Colourfix paper A3

Dhows traditionally are large wooden ships made from teak wood imported from India. These ships are usually bought by arab merchants for trading and fishing in the Persian Gulf.
Dhow building is still practiced in the United Arab Emirates and performs an important role of trade between countries like Iran, India, and Eastern Africa.

WOW! You have captured the light in this face so well Colombe! I love the limited, and very harmonious, colours! Easily scores 100 on my ‘Gaspometer’!!! LOL!

  • Ha, ha Lynda, I like your invention of new words, “gaspometer” is a good one!
You are always so full of praise for my work, I am incredibly grateful to you for that (don’t know if I always deserve your enthusiasm!). Thank you ever so much anyway!

What wonderful piercing eyes… excellent portrait Colombe.
PS you may want to copy and paste your fun reply to Lynda so she’ll be able to see it. Luv Jim

  • Ooops! Thank you for noticing my mistake with my reply to Lynda….. All fixed now.
Well this guy actually had stars reflecting in his eyes. Must have been the flash or something, it’s quite distinct in the photo. All I had to do was to paint them in, and presto!
    Thank you Jim!

Oulala ! And last but not least, the comment you give about the Dhows, this very interesting.
(Also Lynda’s always new funny terms she employs to comment things !)
    C Ya Birdie !

  • From Birdie to Froggy…… Thank you big sis, you are very generous with your comment.
I love how you give a total analysis of the paintings, you must look at every detail very closely and then you give your appreciation. It is very valuable to me!
I think you should be an art critic!

Colome, you are a master at this!! I looked at Michiel’s photograph and it was a struggle to figure out which was the photo and which was the drawing.
    Sooo awesome!! Well done!!!
    Helette

  • Ha, ha, thank you for your great comment Helette. RB seems to smooth out the rough edges every time I upload something. If you could see the original painting you’d notice all the strokes of the pastel stick!
Cheers and keep up your good work.
