Day 56 – 2 April 2012 FOOD FOR THOUGHT!
Those stingers – nettles. Amazing plants all the same. My father and mother grew up eating them, boiled, “full of goodness” they would tell us. Couldn’t convince us to try them them though. Stingers – to us.
As children we would play together in the local fields and every day come back home with dock leaves trying to ease the pain of the nettle stings. Fond memories believe it or not!
So with my Canon A2200 powershot digital camera I captured these ones up close.

great shot colleen, weve got the same over here, they must have bought over from ireland years ago, they do give a sting thats for sure, dont know about eating them, might be a good cure for things, cheers ,fazza

  • Ah hi there Buddy (one of my BEST buddies on REDBUBBLE) It’s worth a try but check it out first – I ain’t no expert Fazza! You know what, I do believe in the power of POSITIVE thinking, Fazza.

No matter what stings us in life – (and we all get stung .. it’s only a matter of time), if we look for some good in it or out of it .. it can help. (It works for me anyway – just one of my little theories in life – hope you didnt mind me sharing it with you!) Love Colleen – Colleen2012

    Nicely Nettley
Stinging nettles have a flavour similar to spinach when cooked and are rich in vitamins A, C, iron, potassium, manganese, and calcium.

  • Thanks for that Yampi. It certainly sounds very nutritious and something to be included in the diet. Now all we need is an appetising recipe to top it off.

    Interesting Colleen !
I’ve never had a Nettle. I’m not sure if we have them here in USA ,
I’ll have to check on that. Thanks for sharing and nice work as always. :)))

  • They sound so nutritious Jon don’t they packed with goodness. Always knew my parents had the right ingredients for a long and healthy life. Maybe I should be brave and try them too. Never too late!

Great capture Colleen, great colour and detail.
Not sure I could eat them though, even if they are full of vitamins, like you I remember the sting followed by the dock leaf

  • Hi Jezz how you doing today then? Not long up me and I think I could do with a cupful of this delicious nettle concoction. Yampimon has got me thinking Jezz. Maybe if we ate more of these natural greens that grow right in fron of our very eyes .. we’d all be a litttle healthier.
Hmm – theres food for thought!
Must enter this in the food for thought group – see do they accept it – what u think?

They make very good soup Colleen. An old lady who lived across the road used to collect them when I was a wee boy to do just that!
    Nettles over here!
Rabbit warrens are often surrounded by them!
Excellent detail in yah shot :O) xx

  • Thanks Robin for the comment there. Hmmm but did you ever have the opportunity to taste the soup? It must have been good – if it was used in Scotland as well as Ireland. Maybe we should re-introduce it to our daily diets – wouldnt it be a nice natural ingredient! Hmm .. Nettle soup coming right up!
