Today while hiking along the East Coast Trail, I came across this rare and beautiful orchid. In some provinces in Canada (and some of the US states) this flower is protected by law.
If the plant’s blossom does complete it’s full cycle, it will not regenerate; for this reason, it is recommended that the flower not be picked.
This orchid has a symbiotic relationship with a fungus in the soil around it that allows it to obtain nutrients and therefore successful transplantation is extremely rare.

Nice Lady Slipper, Colin. The flower of PEI. Actually, Mui-Ling, the flower of Newfoundland is the Pitcher Plant. Funny enough, though… I saw more Lady Slippers while I lived in Newfoundland.
Superb image Colin !
