A small shell found on the beach…about the size of a little finger nail. Any ideas?

Hi Clare, this is a superb image, I just love it immensely, you have photographed this so wonderfully. The shell is an Annelid worm casing, probably a Polychaete called Spirobid. Commonly known as spiral worms.

No I’m wrong, its a Mollusc called Spirula spirula or Ram’s Horn, and belongs to the cephalopod family (same as cuttlefish and octupus etc) they live in deep tropical waters and when the animal dies the shells float to the surface and get washed ashore, found all over Australia from NT to Tassie…still love the image just as much though!!!

  • thank you Suellen.
I’m an ‘Aries’ so I guess it’s my shell :)
