Bridges were crucial to Salisbury’s success as a medieval trading centre. It was important to have safe, dry river crossings for people coming in to the market from places round about. Crane Bridge was built in the 15th Century. Although it has been widened twice since then, the arches were reused, so it has kept its character. Crane Bridge and Crane Street were named after a house called the Crane.
