Moorish Andalucia

Colin Cartwright

Moorish Andalucia

Painted from the terrace of a rented apartment in the tiny village of El Golco. In Andalucia, Southern Spain.
The Moorish architecture, with characteristic domes and ‘godfather’ chimneys.

This was my first attempt at ‘en plein air’ painting.
The second of two paintings, I did in El golco.

(As I further appraised this, after uploading today, it seems more abstract. Although I didn’t intend that, at the time!)

June 2007.
Watercolour, 11” x 8” on rough paper.

wow..this is a lot stronger in color compared to the others…very very well done!

  • Colin Cartwright replied

    Thanks, Helene.

Yes, it was difficult to replicate the very bright light of that area. The strong light brings out lots of contrast and colour, at that time of summer (june) in Southern Spain. So I tried to depict that.

Now as I get more experienced, I use more delicate washes.

They do say that you can’t beat working outdoors to capture the real mood of a place – OK in sunny places but not so easy here. It certainly works for you Colin.

Good work Colin. So far my attempts en plein air have been disasterous. I live right by a river, but do you think I can paint it? Nope..every attempt so far has been a failure! Yours is lovely though, you’ve doe a great job with the perspective.

Just relax and go for it! It’s when you have little doubts, that errors creep in.

I tried one in Madeira this xmas – but wasn’t really well enough on the day. It failed. I forgot how to paint. And I was self-conscious, when the locals were lurking around. No where to hide, and as a beginner – the results are always uncertain!

Thanks for the kind words, Estelle.
