Middlesbrough Drops, revised

Colin Cartwright

Middlesbrough Drops, revised

A revised version of my ‘Middlesbrough Drops’ watercolour painting.

The coal drops on the river Tees estuary, in the 1830’s.
In the foreground, is the Tees river ferry – which in those days, was a small, rowing boat.

I love the daunting and weird, distant grey structures, ready to drop the coal upon the collier (coal) ships.

My version of a Thomas Harrison Hair, 1837 watercolour.

Watercolour and HB pencil.

This one’s just too beautiful, Colin! It’s simply fabulous!
What are “the drops”? Like the “locks” in Panama? What are the big, curved things? Forgive my ignorance, but… I’ll only learn if I ask, eh?

  • Colin Cartwright replied

Thanks, Dayonda! Did you notice, you’d commented on this when I first uploaded 8 months back?

I have a whole series of Thomas Harrison Hair (1830’s) watercolours, (you can see them in one folder, if you click on my bubblesite) which I painted and did my own thing with.
I have his style to thank for teaching me how to see perspective – he was a genius of his time, but ignored and now nobody has heard of him.

The drops were massive wooden constructions, in the 19th century, which had very early locomotive trains, dropping off big coal wagons, and these tipped straight into the coal ships in the river, to be delivered overseas and at home.
