Wallsend Pit 1838
This is the very first of my Thomas Hair (1810 – 1875) series.
So apologies for any amateur bits – as I’d beenpainting for less than a year, when I did this.
Watercolour rough 140lbs.
Using very cheap, wcol pan paint.

I too like the muted colours, and the choice of rough paper really enhances the treatment of the subject. I can’t see any amateruish bits. Well done.

Smoke can be difficult to portray, but you’ve done it very well.

It’s just the negative painting, around the smoke, to convey the effect merely from the plain white paper.

Rough paper used very well Colin. You’ve made remarkable progress in your year of watercolour painting. Most of us tend to be a bit shy of strong tones early on, but you show you’re made of braver stuff.
