Arabesque
In this abstract, I have attempted to capture the essence of an Arabic street market scene.
I worked quickly and used instinct and subconscious, rather than technical composition skill.
I have used glued painted paper shapes, then painted an impressionist watercolour scene around the collage.
16th Sept 2008 update.
I’m currently working on a larger, watercolour-only, version of this 14”x10”.
less abstract and more real, but with impressionistic aspects.

When I was only 6 years old, on my way to Australia from UK, with long silver hair, I became lost in a bazaar in Beruit and my mother thought I had been kidnapped. (I hadn’t, I was eventually found in an Arab’s stall while they all stroked my long white hair!). This painting brought that memory flooding back into my mind. Gorgeous choice of colour and I like the way you have used the shapes. Another favourite!
Colin Cartwright
An interesting tale of your long journey via the Lebanon!
The Arabs would have loved your bright hair, Estelle.
I enjoyed your reminiscing – added nicely to my painting. Thank you.

Beautiful Colin! I can “smell” the atmosphere…the cooking, the spices, and I can can hear the busy chatter and see the busy goings-on! Superb work Colin….you bring such life to your work!

I’m fascinated by the process you’ve used here. Very refined, yet seemingly experimental. Great stuff.
Colin Cartwright
Thanks very much. This was my first attempt (andmy favourite) at experimental work. It’s great therapy, when you get one that you like.
I have a second one, I painted, a ship at sea. I may upload that one sometime.

Beautiful. i’m no expert in painting but this artwork grabbed my attention and indeed transported me back to the familiar streets and markets of the middle east. well done. Thanks for sharing with the art of the Middle East group.
Colin Cartwright replied
Thank you very much, Eyal.
I’m very pleased that my abstract card shapes and painting, had that effect upon you! A fine complement.
I am currently completing a larger, watercolour version of this scene.
EdgeOfReality
I love the loose, painterly style that you’ve used for this. Sometimes I think speed in putting the paint onto canvas or paper gives superior results as in this case. Well done.
Colin Cartwright replied
Yes! This one was a primal, right-brained, product!
My watercolour, Market Day’, which I recently completed, was a slower, careful, and much more technical offering.
And fast can be fresh and fun.

Great work!!

Another top pick from Sharon for her Impressionist Art feature. I missed this one in your portfolio Colin. Love everything about it! The colors are fabulous!! And your experiment with cut paper worked nicely!! Congrats!
Colin Cartwright replied
Thanks Frannie. This was a subconscious painting/collage – I’ve never done one since. It’s coarse and rough, yet I think the essence of the scene comes over in the abstract.
