Raven's Rest, the second
This is the second version of my ‘Raven’s Rest’ painting. Again, in watercolour.
I like this one better, as it conveys more of a ‘painterly’ feel.
This is the riverside park, on reclaimed land, on a formerly heavily industrial area on the banks of the river Tyne, in Felling, Gateshead.

This is just as beautiful as the first version Colin . . . I actually see a face in your sky . . . was that planned? Very poetic image. . . .
Colin Cartwright replied
No, I think I may have unconsciously tried to reflect the bird shape in the cloud.
Thanks Ruth, for a thoughtful icomment
whisperingruth
Can you see the face?
Colin Cartwright
Yes, in profile?

There comes a time in all our lives where we come to a path, that splits in to two different directions, and you say to yourself what was I put on this earth for?......what am I supposed to do?..... Well I think this photo answers part of that question you are asking yourself, for me to see such beauty like this must mean 1 thing, and only 1 thing, is that the fist path you have already accomplished, because you have found your …..“Heart….and….soul”…..from such a great painting……….the other path I guess will come in time!

As I said to Bonnie, below, ‘This is the very best site for comments.
It has restored my faith in art sites!’
An excellent and quite philosphical and spiritual comment, my nameless friend.
Thank you very much.

Yes you are right, the first painting is like an entree to the main meal…this has a painterly and more wistful feel to it. The sky is beautiful and I especially like the depth you have achieved in the foreground.

Hi Colin,
You are a very talented artist. I like Raven’s Rest, the second the best.
Great job of making the land, fence & bird in brown tones. The top dark blue sky makes a person move their eye’s into the picture. Just like whisperingruth wrote, I see an abstract face in the sky to the right of the brush branches – the dark blue cloud looks like an eye, about it the brownish cloud formation looks like eyebrows – half way between the eye & the land (more to the right) is a nose of pinkish clouds with the nostral being a dark cloud – the mouth is light reddish (follow the white Z shape from the Raven to the end of it to see the mouth – below the mouth is a light dark blueish cloud that forms (looks like) the chin.
Take care, Bonnie

It has restored my faith in art sites! Superb analysis of that face in profile, Bonnie – and I see it now!
Almost a Mister Punch caricature of a face. Yes!
And thank you for the compliment! I’m new to painting (despite being nearly 50) and never picked up a pencil or brush, until about 15 months ago.

wonderful Colin !

Such lovely work. I like the perspective of the fence railings. Soft colors add to the composition. This is another favorite of mine.
Colin Cartwright
Thank you very much! Wildwings.

A lovely composition. I like the way that you’ve painted in the bushes, leaves and post shadows.

The book I’m reading at the mo has loads about ravens and how the Celts thought of them – and this really catches the atmosphere & mood – I love those tones and composition. Stunning! (I can see the face but it doesn’t detract!)

Lovely work Colin….brooding landscape with that light…”dark satanic mills …and clouded hills”...it reminds me of the words to Jerusalem by William Blake.~Anni

Thanks very much, Anni. A nicely apposite comment.
