Holy Island at Sunrise.
My first ever use of acrylic!
After three years of using watercolour, I found it a strange way to paint!!
This is the view from the mainland of Northumberland, along the causeway to the island, and the castle of Lindisfarne in the distance.

Beautiful work Colin!
Marsha Elliott
The sunset & reflection in the water is wonderful in this – the colors are so vibrant. And the depth perception is very well done – looks like a very long walk out to that reef.
Colin Cartwright replied
The causeway is 7 miles long, Marsha. And once the tide is in, only helicopter can come to your aid!
LTScribble
wow….it looks beautiful no matter what…..but add in a new medium and double wow…......you did absolutely fantastic
Colin Cartwright replied
Thank you very much, LT. Very kind of you to say so.
Julie-Ann Vellios
This is beautiful and I think that you have used the acrylics so well – the colours of the sky are lovely and the thicker lines in the foreground are dramatic. You paint light really well, Colin. This is really good work so be happy.
Colin Cartwright replied
Thanks very much, Julie-Ann. An excellent critique and encouraging.
I’m surprised I painted this so well, as my pain levels were off the scale today. I sat with my head in my hands, and had to do something to distract myself from the pain.
catherine walker
wonderful painting!
Colin Cartwright replied
Thanks a lot, Catherine, I appreciate your visit.
Shulie1
Gorgeous colours – the blues and oranges go really well together
Colin Cartwright replied
Thanks a lot, Shulie!
Linda Callaghan
beautiful colours Colin….great perspective and depth…did you enjoy using acylics for your first time?
Colin Cartwright replied
Yes indeed, Linda. Weird and so bold and strong – unlike my usual more subtle watercolours, that I wasn’t sure if it would work. Especially as today was one of my, ‘blinding exploding headache ’ days…painkillers couldn’t touch the agony…so a painting had to be the therapy!!!
Jim Phillips
Gorgeous Colin, wonderful work. It’s hard to believe that this was your first attempt at acrylics. Maybe you ought to try the gouache colours. This medium will give you a bit more boldness without completely giving up your watercolour style. It’s a nice middle ground between watercolours and acrylics.
Colin Cartwright replied
Thanks Jim. Yes I tried gouache and didn’t rate it. It’s great for opaque highlights in watercolour. But as a medium on its own, seems unwieldy.
I mentioned to Barry below, that my painting here, looks awful in the glare of the digital photo and on screen, hard and soulless. Yet the real thing looks realistic and softer – specially from a distance.
I don’t know if you’ve found that? My watercolours, seem to translate to digital quite well.
Linda Callaghan
oh sorry to hear about your headache Colin ….it did not stop you producing a wonderful first acrylic painting…! :-) take it easy….
Colin Cartwright replied
Thanks, Linda. Maybe sometimes a lot of pain is vented through creativity? That’s what drove me to painting in the first place. Higher Level maths for a pastime, was great, but tiring, so I tried some right-brained aesthetic stuff….and never stopped yet!
Ken Powers
This piece has a great overall tonality. Very nice!

Lovely work Colin

very nice
GEORGE SANDERSON
Excellent work Colin
A brilliant first attempt with acrylics !
Colin Cartwright replied
And a lot better than the appalling paintings by local artists, selling for 300 quid, on Wooler high street!
Thanks, George. Much appreciated.
Woodie
Excellent result at your first attempt at acrylics Colin,
I really love the sky!!!
Into faves, Cheers neil
Colin Cartwright replied
I think your plane paintings were done in acrylics? A fine encouraging compliment, Neil.
Barry Norton
Wonderful result for first attempt
Colin Cartwright replied
Thanks a lot, Barry. Strangely, it looks awful in the glare of the digital photo and on screen, hard and soulless. Yet the real thing looks realistic and softer – specially from a distance.
Unlike my watercolours here – which translate to digital 1s and 0s quite well!
ROUBLE RUST
Oh I love both watercolours & acrylics – using them together.
Great first painting with acrylics Colin, I love the way you handle the colours of the sky xx
Colin Cartwright replied
Thanks very much for that excellent comment, RR. Acrylic is a hard and difficult medium, after watercolours!
I have sent two mails to redbubble, about there error system on a new group application, but they haven’t replied, so looks as though our new group is not going ahead – as we can’t even apply..
ROUBLE RUST
Really? I had a very looong delay with a challenge I posted in HALLOWEEN group & from my feeds I saw that many challenges started all together – something must be going on “inside” rb. I contact for this with the rb admins but I have got reply either.
Sure they will contact with you sometime – you can continue trying tho. Maybe there’s a problem, they will fix it.
You’re welcome for the comment, you know I love your work x
Scott d'Almeida
outstanding,
Colin Cartwright replied
Cheers, Scott. Much appreciated!
BLYTHART
In a recent comment you described this picture of your as superb and I tend to agree with you.
Colin Cartwright replied
That’s me being uncharacteristically immodest, Dave. I didn’t rate it, but I’m told it’s one of my best!
Very kind of you to say so, thanks, my friend.
I think you’re right If I don’t blow my own trumpet, I’ll never sell my first one.
madvlad
