Old Stones and New Flowers
Watercolour of the 12th century, Haddon Hall, Derbyshire.
Taken from Rinkydink’s original photo.
I used lots of lifting off and negative painting, to get the tonal contrasts. I wanted to emphasize the age and wonderful textures of the old stone work – almost a thousand years old.
I’ve entered this in the Just Watercolours group challenge.
I really liked the original photo colouring. For this, I needed a limited palette of just four – sienna, umber, cerulean and yellow , which I used in various dilutions and mixtures.
St Petersburg watercolour pans.
12 X 8 inches 30×20 cms
Poundworld 90lb paper.

Lynda Robinson
You are a ‘master’ of the watercolour medium Colin. You really have captured the textgure in the stonework perfectly. This should do really well in the challenge.
Colin Cartwright replied
Thanks, Lynda. The texturing was the biggest objective. And I’m delighted with my efforts. I always do badly in challenges. I’ve only got 2 votes for this one, so far.
Karin Taylor

Bonnie Steinbach
Gorgeous Colin! I was thinking of doing one kinda similar, not sure how it will turn out…this is very good. Hugs, Bon
Colin Cartwright replied
Do it, Bon! You need some grounding and therapy at the minute – this would be ideal, even if it is just a quick watercolour.
Hope Den is recovering well.
Brian Towers
This is full of interesting texture and contrast Colin. There’s also a strong feeling of perspective which give a lot of depth to the picture. Good un!

Colin Cartwright replied
Thanks, Sandy. It’s just a bit of fun. but I always learn from each painting, as I am a beginner.
And I do hope there are some votes this time!!!
And thanks for asking for it to be rerun. As I love the watercolour challenge of conveying the character and atmosphere of really old buildings!

Mishka Góra
Beautiful work, Colin! I just adore the stonework. Wonderfully done….
Billlee
Colin I should look at your work more often!! This is stunning!! The detail, the perspective, the texturing and solid feeling of the walls. So inviting and the limited palette creates a subtle understatement, which in fact enhances the composition. I have known Haddon Hall for most of my life…. I never saw like this before!!
Colin Cartwright replied
Thanks, Bill. Hope you voted for it!
Ken Powers
Great job on this one Colin! Nicely done.
Colin Cartwright replied
Thanks very much, Ken. Much appreciated encouragement.

Absolutely stunning work. I love your colour scheme and the authenticity of the rustic stone and glass. Thanks so much for entering the challenge. Goodluck!
Colin Cartwright replied
Thanks for the welcome and descriptive comment, Kymbo!

TaniaLosada
it’s amazing!
Colin Cartwright
There were 42 excellent and encouraging comments above – but very few of those voted, Only 5. As I predictably got nowhere in the challenge I painted this for. Just goes to show, most don’t read the text, next to an an image.
Marsha Elliott
Sorry this didn’t win the challenge – it certainly should have. So very well done all the way around. Makes me wonder what’s waiting beyond the passageway.

Thanks, Marsha. yes it didn’t even get second. I don’t think viewers look at art pro reply, just vote for the individual, not the image. Just shows you, how different tastes are.
As a beginner, I’m learning to develop a slightly thicker skin.
But my fragile confidence, won’t let me enter any more challenges, after my latest one, ‘Dingley Dell’, watercolour challenge entry.
linmarie
FABULOUS stone work and detail too windows and foliage,, this is a gallery piece my friend,, peace and love LINMARIE

Super work – go for the challenges Colin- the beauty of art is in the eye of the beholder – you win some you lose some. Great perspective and detail here.

Congratulations Colin for your Old Stones And New Flowers painting being deservedly featured
Colin Cartwright replied 3 days ago
Cheers, John. The tonal values were difficult, but I learned a lot from this painting – like I do with all of them, as I’m still a beginner.
Yes, I came third out of five with this! Put me off contests.

I love the texture and the beautiful colors

Colin i started painting in 1974 and believe me my friend I’m still learning how to paint to and i to have lost contests to inferior art and i have seen fantastic artists art that should have won lose to some pretty bad art in competitions and shore it makes one angry my friend but that’s the art world and we should not let it make us give up trying.Whether you win a art contest or not is irrelevant because your art is seen by more people than just the Judges and if your art is the best no body can hide it because what is important is – you did your best – got satisfaction painting it your way -and nobody can take that away from you my friend,
I’m thankful if i win a contest and i appreciate it very much But if i never won a contest ever again in my life or never ever sold a painting i could not care less – I just paint because i love creating art .
Keep painting my friend because your art is appreciated and liked by a lot of people.
Cheers John Cocoris
Colin Cartwright replied 3 days ago
Thanks for your interesting point of view, John. It’s quite philosophical and a good way to look at it. I more or less take this view now. I think I will never sell anything. But it’s a fine therapy for me, as the painting helps me deal with pain on bearable days.
I started painting three years ago, to help with the chronic pain. It was in watercolour, a great way to start, as it’s surely the toughest medium. So I’ve just this week, finished my first oil!
