For 'wor' John Marshall
From a photo of my local church, and tram terminus, at Heworth,1924.
Dedicated to my Uncle John, a veteran of the blitz in 1940, who is bravely fighting his final battle., now bedridden with cancer.
I visited him on Tuesday 7th, and he was well enough to see this painting. A scene from his childhood. And I placed it by his bedside.
He was two, when the photo was taken, (which I used as reference for the painting.) And he is one of the very few, who remember this era of electric trams, when a youngster.
The church stone was dark with centuries of industry back then, but is pale golden sandstone, today, since it has been sanded.
Watercolour and HB pencil. White gouache highlights.
14” x 10” Bockingford Semi-rough 140lb paper
April 21st.
Dedicated to John Marshall McMenemy 1922-2009.

Lynda Robinson
Excellent work Colin! The whole painting is fantastic, especially the sky. (We still have electric trams in Melbourne).
Colin Cartwright replied
Thanks very much, Lynda.
We only have these now in museums, such as the working example, at Beamish museum.
Trams are great in nostalgic retrospect. They replaced horses and carriages!
But now we have a fast, modern and horrible, electric underground train, here on Tyneside.
Linda Callaghan
good to see one of your watercolours Colin have not seen one loaded for a while. this is so interesting and painted perfectly!
Colin Cartwright replied
Thanks very much, Linda!
I have had lots of pain and been unable to paint for a couple of months. But making a big effort to continue my art as therapy.
I’m currently paintng a local coal mine, from a 1920’s photo.

This is both delightful as a painting and a lovely bit of nostalgia. I remember well those noisy trams and the quiet trolly busses. The men with long poles changing overhead lines always stuck in my mind. Well done Colin and nice to see your artwork again.
Mishka Góra
Lovely, Colin! Wonderful sense of nostalgia. Great work!
andrea verstegen
Bet your Uncle liked the painting. As Lynda said, the electric tram is a common sight in Melbourne where I live. And very handy too they are. I like this watercolor, takes you back…..

Thanks a lot, Bon. As supportive as ever!
BLYTHART
You have clearly mastered the art of watercolour Colin. I bet the memories came flooding back for your uncle when he saw this lovely view.
Colin Cartwright replied
Thanks, Dave. A fine comment, my friend. And for faving it, as nobody so far, seemed to like it enough to do that
Yes, he thanked me, but he is so weak, it’s heart breaking seeing him like that, unable to eat and, now unable to really move, for the last 2 months and bedridden. I hope it has made a little difference.
bevmorgan
This is wonderful, Colin. It definitely has the feel of an English watercolour. Love the scene and the time it portrays.
Kate Eller
I love seeing your paintings Colin. They are so beautiful and full of history. Your description is so interesting, poignant, and ….. I am feeling sad for you. You must be very close to your uncle, and what a lovely thing you did for him. I so wish that I could visit your country. You show it to me and others so beautifully in your masterful paintings.

Awesome work Colin. I love the vintage era. I like anything that has timed by years. I am so sorry to hear about your Uncle, God bless him.

Such a tender description. My faith in humanity has been restored once again.
So much is added to hear the providence.. and the you the artist too.
With heartfelt Respect. Very Moved.
Anne .. and I ‘m sure Chris would love this too.
Colin Cartwright replied
Thank you very much, Anne. I’m pleased I painted this in time (I am a slow watercolour painter). I did a painting called ‘Felling Colliery’, (you can see it here) where my uncle worked in the ‘30s, aged 15. But I was too late to show it to him.
F.A. Moore
I adore this watercolor. Beautiful! You’ve captured this lovely part of history. I bet your Uncle must have been so proud to see it. This is such a beautiful tribute of love and respect for him. Definite fav!
Colin Cartwright replied
A lovely comment, Fran. I appreciate that.

Colin Cartwright replied
Thank you very much, Marsha. Very kindly said.
Woodie
This is a wonderful watercolour Colin,
and the bus terminus is still there.
Into faves,
Cheers Neil
Colin Cartwright replied
Thanks Neil. The older I get, and the worse my debilitation, the more I hate the metro!
Margaret Sande... 22 days ago
Can’t stand the metro either. It’d be fine without the chavas polluting the air with expletives and anti-social behaviour. Lovely sense of nostalgia you’ve captured here Colin. Well done for soldiering on despite your problems.
