Desperate amidst the Waves
After I demonstrated a few wave painting techniques, I later thought to join them up into a painting!
A Spontaneous watercolour!
Watercolour 14” x 10” on Bockingford rough 140lb.
So far, nobody has spotted the little men in white shirts, clinging for life, to the torn-off mast (left side of painting).
I’ve entered this into Impressionism Cafe,‘seascapes’

wow – This looks amazing Colin, the colours are fab so fresh and cold… I think one of your bests – If not the #1!!!
Colin Cartwright replied
Cheers, my friend. This was just a quick demonstration of wave painting to a friend. And later, I simply joined the painted examples together, on this same sheet! Maybe quick and spontaneous is best?
ROUBLE RUST
...yes, maybe! wow! I’m teling you the truth – when I saw it the first moment I wainted to get up and start running! It’s so alive and it has so much energy, momevent. Plus I love this colours, like ice, deep blue… even green I think?!

This really works Colin – loads of colour and action with just a hint of human disaster in the background. Excellent work.

Superb Work !

Absolutely terrific painting of the sea Colin. Your best yet. The derigged sailing ship gives it great scale!!!
Cheers Neil
Lynda Robinson
Excellent work Colin. Just about to hop in the car and head off to the beach RIGHT NOW! Hope it is not as rough as this!!!!!
Colin Cartwright replied
And a lot warmer than here!

Very powerful image Colin

Colin, this is mesmerizing. What a beauty. Those waves are so dramatic, and, well I am a litlle speechless. You out-did yourself. This reminds me of a painting by Carl G. Evers called “Heavy Seas: Trawler in North Atlantic”. I am a real fan of nautical and marine paintings, and this is a favorite.
Mishka Góra
Terrific work!

You do know how to make the water move I’ll tell ya that. My goodness.
When I saw the little boat in all that water with the title I thought, he’s desperate but he’ll ride out the storm, he’ll make it through to calmer seas. I don’t know why but that’s what came to mind.
Smiles to you and yours,
Austin
Bonnie Steinbach
Wow, great tribulation on a stormy sea. Love it Colin! Hugs, Bon
K. A. Cooper
Really dig the work you are producing, man! Your water pieces are amazing.
Colin Cartwright replied
Thanks Kev.
I’m inspired by the world’s best painter IMHO – Ivan Aivazovsky (1817-1900). I’ve just got a book of his seascapes paintings.
Helene Kippert
Wonderful work!
Avril Brand
Gosh, your work is just stunning, Colin!!
Linda Callaghan

Don’t worry, Linda. I’ve done the same thing a few times(and inevitably apologized!).

Colin..this is gorgeous. I really like the waves. The desperation of that poor ship is very noticeable.
andrea verstegen
Some fantastic , energetic paintwork going on there in the front. Your GOOD!
Colin Cartwright replied
Thanks, Andrea.
It’s odd, but this started as a demonstration of wave painting – and ended as a spontaneous and almost ‘automatic’ painting!
andrea verstegen
Awesome. You’ve abviously had so much experience in this field of work, that it doesn’t take much effort to produce something as good as this. I must show my son these paintings…we’re building an airfix model of The HMS Victory at the moment…..
Tahnja
Wowee Colin, that is some kinda spectacular sea, what a master you are. I’m bloody hopeless at water, I need to learn from you
Colin Cartwright replied
Thanks a lot Tahnja! I’m still learning – and as I look at Ivan Aivazovsky’s works of genius, I know how far I have to go!
Ming Myaskovsky
So many to choose from. You are a truly a prolific artist. What you do, keeping doing it. Best Regards.
Jase036
Lovely work as usual, but this one has so much power! The fact that it was spontaneous and improvised speaks volumes about your ability. This image has been featured!

Congratulations!

Much obliged, Jase. And thanks also, for the kind comment.
Ricky Pfeiffer

Colin Cartwright replied
Thanks, Ricky. And for studying it enough to see the little desperate survivors!
gabbielizzie
great work,congradulations on your feature
Suzanne Chouinard
Wow! Great work.!
Avril Brand
This is stunning work! I can feel that cold spray and all the emotions of desperation and fear! Wow, incredible work, Colin. But then, so is everything in your portfolio. This one, however, is simply genius. Almost historical in the way it tells the story of the shipwreck!
Colin Cartwright replied
Thank you for those encouraging words, Avril.
I studied paintings by Russian seascape master, Ivan Aivazovsky, for this.
PamAmos
this is a powerful painting…......full of movement….....I love the colours and the composition…...Pam :)
Susan E Ward
Great painting! I think I’ve been there. Maybe I’m a survivor.
Thanks, Colin, for such a vivid documentation of helplessness.
