Guardians of the Solstice
“Ancient guardians
of time and secrets,
the stone giants
lean and whisper
of their youth.
The whisperers remember
when the age was new,
and shadows had not fallen
across the broad moor.
The Standing Stones
keep well their secrets
teasing with memories
that only the dead
can know”
poem by Celtic Poet.
Rie Sheridan

Or is this a painting?....Sometimes its difficult to tell on the monitor. Either way, its a beautiful image to find on our screens today, thank you for posting the poem and art.
Colin Cartwright replied
It’s a bit of both, Helena!!
I took two of my local Norhumberland photos, – one from Hadrian’s Wall, and the other, the wonderful (but lesser known) 6000 year old, Duddo stones. Layered and blended them together.
Then lots of photoshop work and digital painting. Always the poor relation for me, in terms of style and skill, of the brush, paint and paper!
But faster.

Boy, this is great!...and I’m so amazed by this and also at what I just learned…..that there are more than just a few places like this, more than Stonehenge….but tons(no pun int.)of these megalith sites all over there (uk) and I never knew that. So much I don’t know about uk…..well, every little bit accumulates, and I’ve always been fascinated with Stonehenge and now I have more to research to do…...thankyou for putting this up, Colin…...................!.........r

clever work, Colin. I have a weakness for standing stones and old druid places, my favourite, to date, is Macchrie Moor on Arran. I think this image sums up the essence of these old sites. I just hope I can return in the not too distant to find and photograph some more.. I really like your watercolor works too. I was born on the Cornish coast and love the scenery in that part of the world.

Love this.
It has an eerie apocalyptic feel to it.

I love this one Colin..it appeals to my love of standing stones..stunning composition!..you’ll have been over to Castlerigg? I must find out where the Duddo ones are not been there…yet :o)
Colin Cartwright replied
Thanks, Catriona. They are just 4 miles over the border from Norham villiage, about, 6 miles south-west of Berwick.
Very few know about this spot, and there is the wonderful backdrop of the Cheviot hills, behind them.
