Ramsgate Harbour

Colin Cartwright

Ramsgate Harbour

Another in the Masters series.
This is the centre part of a long panoramic watercolour. By Thomas Bush Hardy, 1895.

I’ve moved some of the boats to be closer together, as my version is a small painting, 10×7 inches, on rough Bockingford tinted cream paper, 140lb.

I will be painting the full length seascape in the future.

Ramsgate Harbour belongs to the following groups:

the bleed in the sky, across a cream tinted paper adds the majesty and power both hardy and turner were trying to achieve,
unfortunately (now this is only a comment not a critisism, the seascape artists of the day seperated the watercraft close to light houses and cliffs by a sense of impending ’ accident of natural power’ your interpretation has brought that imagery so close that the power of the ocean to cause the mishap and the gathering closeness of the vessels implies imiment seamanship catastrophies caused by a sense of fleeing the harbour.
colours, presentation and individual interpretation here is great!!
and I like those commenting above look forward to the “full version”

Colin, you have outdone yourself in this one, the movement is really something.

  • Colin Cartwright replied

    Thankyou,Bonnie.

Learning from the Masters, is quite a learning (and humbling) experience. Thomas Bush Hardy, is a victorian artist I hadn’t heard of, but his harbour paintings are wonderful!

  • BLYTHART

A good creative idea of yours to move the boats a little. That takes it beyond being a copy of someone else’s work and makes it more your own.

  • Colin Cartwright replied

Copies are never copies. Unless you are an expert forger painter – like the late Tom Keating. when we paint a master painting, we add our own style and take away the elements which made it an original.

Very nice Colin. Confident and expressive handling of the paint. You’re seascapes have reminded me that I must make an attempt at copying one of my own.

What a wonderful painting Colin. The sky has such a luminous quality. You have captured a very special light that is not easy to do. You have a very good feel for rough waters. Colors are lovely.

A lovely watercolour. A smashing sky – love your treatment of the sea and the boats. It certainly looks rough. Your are so right about art, in a way it is a healer even if it doesn’t completely heal. I love to paint as much as I can.

PS I would like to thank you for your very kind comment on Degas Dancers at Rest.

  • Colin Cartwright replied

Thanks Jazzabel! And you’re very welcome, as your dancers are excellent.

Yes, art is keeping me sane. And I didn’t pick up a brush until a couple of years ago.

You can temporarily forget the pain while you focus on the painting process.

I’m steadily learning. I have the full-size panorama painting of this, which I finished a couple of weeks ago, and it’s in my gallery, called ‘Off Ramsgate’.

YOU WROTE: “Unless you are an expert forger painter – like the late Tom Keating”. Many years ago when I was in my twenties I bought a book about Tom Keating – quite a character :)

  • Colin Cartwright replied

My art consultant, brought my attention to him. Quite an amazing character and talent. He died through years of inhaling the toxic fumes of turpentine, and other thinners.
