In Dock

Painted from a very old photo (1857) of a collier brig. Taken from my wonderful book of North East sailing ships on the coast.
And the ship, background and quay, are painted from the fenland port of Wisbech, on the Lincolnshire coast.

The rest of the painting is from my imagination.

Watercolour on two rivers, hand-made 140lb paper.
14” x 21”

I’ve got to say you got plenty of ‘ummph’ in this painting Colin. Watercolours are often used with a delicate pale approach so it’s nice to see some strong tones and contrasts for a change. Those touches of red set it off well.

    Thanks, Bon.
The gulls are a combination of zinc gouache, and scalpel etching.

    Great painting Colin
you alway manage to get that authentic antique look to your work, this one is so dramatic !!

  • Colin Cartwright replied

Thanks, George. I copied several Thomas Hair watercolours of industrial Tyneside from the 1830’s. That influence is coming into many of my paintings from history.

This is a spectacular painting. The ambience, contrasting colors, amazing imagery,
especially in the striking clouds combine to create an extraordinary piece. Your
imagination knows no bounds and this exquisite painting is a gift to all of us
who are fortunate to view your profound work. I hope you add this piece to
    “the healing journey.”

  • Colin Cartwright replied

    Superb comment, Julie!!!
Concise, insightful and a pleasure to receive. You’ve really added to this piece for me. Thank you very much.
I handed this one in, as my project piece in my Shipley Gallery Masters class.

I’ve just looked, it’s already in “The healing journey”.

By the way, can you send me your sepia family photo? as I promised to mend it.

    Kind regards
    Colin.

I love the colours in this one Colin. That moody sky is amazing.

  • Colin Cartwright replied

    Thanks a lot, Peggy!
I started this painting with the sky, and I thought I was losing the paint to the wayward water…until it dried nicely!

  • Nico van der merwe

    Nico van der ...

Particular big favorite of mine in your gallery. The clouds + seagulls are brilliant! Even the little bit of blue in the clouds on top evens out the whole painting so nicely and without it there would be ‘something’ missing overall, nicely done there too :)

  • Colin Cartwright replied

Thanks very much, Nico. An excellent critique. It’s great to hear how this painting appeared to you.

I painted this at the local art gallery – where there were many seascapes at the time – no doubt unconsciously influencing my painting there. I started this with a wet in wet sky. I just wanted some turbulence and impact of colour. And no idea of where it was going. Until I went back to my love of old ships, with a realistic harbour and background from a photo reference.

    Much appreciated.
