Tynemouth Sands
Another in my ‘Painting In the style of the Masters’, on my course at Shipley art gallery.
Henry Horton was a local artist (I’ve no info available) and painted in an abstract style. This one is the sands at Tynemouth.
His unusual style is one which I needed to study to appreciate.

Thanks, Hilary. I hated this when I first saw it, but like most paintings, it’s best to keep an open mind, ‘til it grows on me.
Jim Phillips
I’m not familiar with Horton, but I do know this is a grand example of impressionistic watercolour. Very nice Colin.

You used a scalpel? That’s interesting , I like this one too, and I can’t wait to see the final Colin Cartwright style not doubt a mixture of all you have studied from plus a little bit of just Colin. Beautiful colours and I love the bird details too. Hugs, Bon
Colin Cartwright replied
Yes it works wonders, to really highlight whites against darks, in a watercolour painting.
This is a great course, to use the techniques of the old Masters and incorporate into my own style.

This is excellent, Colin! Lovely work!

Well done Colin. I find a lot of watercolours tend to be very light in tone so it’s nice to see bold ones too. This reminds me a bit of Roland Hilda (or Hilder) who, against the trend, used black very successfully in his watercolours.
Colin Cartwright replied
Thanks, Brian. by studying the Masters, I’m learning some flexible and lateral thinking with watercolours on my course at the Shipley art gallery. Things like adding china white, and sometimes gouache for highlights. Also scalpel for etching bright areas.

I would say that’s very much the enjoyment of art, Colin, experimenting and finding new effects. I remember bucking the trend in my youth by using opague white and then went on to enhance watercolours with pastel and coloured pencil despite what those ‘experts’ ruled at that time. As long as it’s technically OK then anything goes.

Brilliant work….I have sold 2 or 3 Horton watercolours over the years and you have captured his style. Well done Colin. There are 3 Horton paintings on show at North Shields library
Colin Cartwright replied
I will hop on the metro and have a look! Thanks, Peter.
Horton’s style is odd – like he’s been standing in the rain and painting!
This was from my course at the Shipley art gallery in Gateshead. Where we paint in the style of the local, and fairly unknown, Master watercolourists.
