Beached

Beached

A tops’l schooner has been wrecked ashore in shallow water, in the North East coal harbour of Cullercoats, circa1880’s.

Most winter’s saw at least one sailing ship wrecked at the mouth of the river Tyne.

A Victorian photo from my priceless book, was used for the painting.

Watercolour and HB pencil drawing. 12” x 8”.

A bit of history captured in line and colour Colin. I remember once trying to find something interesting with a metal detector on the Black Middens rocks at the mouth of the Tyne which saw many a ship wrecked.

No you are not doing anything wrong Colin. Your work is wonderful, especially the style. I really like this painting, the whole feel of it is spot on. You manage not only to get the details and technique correct, but you seem to be able to imbue your work with the aura of the era…maybe because you love it.,,,and it shines through in your paintings. So if people aren’t looking or commenting – it’s their loss! Yours is one of the best portfolios on the bubble I reckon. Warm regards, your friend Estelle xx

  • Colin Cartwright replied

Thanks for that perceptive comment, Estelle.

I swear these are getting better every time you apply that brush to canvas!! This is a delight Colin, knowing the book I admire the way you interpret the colours from the old B/W images. Cheers, Bill.

Yes, you need imagination and some creative licence, to bring these to convey credible life.
I try to think of (and portray) the stormy skies, which produces wrecks.
I’m working on an A3 sized painting, of another local (Sunderland) wreck, at the moment.

And thanks again, for introducing me to that superb book of old ship photos.

Colin, I wish you would not base your opinion of your work based on the lack of commentary about your paintings. You are unique and have a traditional style that you execute with technical expertise and as Estelle said your stunning interpretation of an era that you love is reflected in your extraordinary artwork. No matter what the genre, you are a fantastic artist. This is an exceptional painting of the Victorian era and since actions speak louder than words, I featured this beautiful painting in the healing
journey to reflect my admiration for your amazing talent.

  • Colin Cartwright replied

Thanks for that ‘booster-shot’ in the arm (ego), from Dr Julie!
A wonderfully meaningful, and inspiring, comment, Julie. I very much appreciate it.
