You stand and face the limitless truth
A turning ideal, of harmony and grace
Yet to undermine your self-esteem
I must make you see
It’s not what it seems
Why dawdle and waste
What time we have
What limited lines we have on a page
To create and shape,
Before we fall, into the dust.

Lots of depth here and plenty for the imagination to work with. Lovely poem. Which poets do you personally like?
thanks again, i really appreciate it!
I don’t really like individual poets in particular, or don’t know enough poets to say (apart from Blake, who’s poems are simply beautifully lyrical), but certain phrases stick with me, such as this:
Now if the harvest is over
And the world is cold
Give me the bonus of laughter
As I lose hold.
-John Betjeman.
To me, that is simply stunning.
– Jonathan Dower
Jonathan, you’re very welcome.
This is interesting – at school and Uni we had to treat poets as individuals – working through their entire repertoire and while that was a good way to guage the development of the poet it was overkill if you didn’t like ALL their work. Your way of looking at poetry seems more liberating!
I don’t know John Betjeman but the poem is wonderful: powerful, succinct and memorable.
i love this, short and simple but full of meaning
