Stick Fishermen
Umm… Somewhere in the south coast of Sri Lanka, possibly Unawatuna, not entirely sure though.
Anyhows, stick fishermen who spend the day sitting on sticks and… well, yes, fishing. It’s quite an awesome sight actually… it’s like a ‘forest’ of sticks on the water. And there were a LOT of them! I think it’s a very traditional method of fishing, especially where you have rocks like this creating a calm area in which they can fish.
I also got a very nice wood carving of a stick fisherman, it’s sitting on my desk right now lol
Found this shot after a huge sort through of some old shots from Sri Lanka- and realised that I had missed quite a lot of shots!
Hope you like!

how odd, i suppose its to stop the fish thinking theyre there…great shot
Jonathan Dower replied
well yeah it’s easier than a boat, often it is too deep to stand (although many will be able to stand where they are – it varies) it’s a very traditional method of coastal fishing though which I guess is present in some form of another right around the Indian Ocean lol
thanks loz!

I can’t even imagine fishermen fishing like this, I come from a fishing family and offload fish on the west coast. This is an awesome picture! Great work! :)

very god capture. thank you for sharing it.
Anuja Manchana...
Great capture Jonathan. This particular method of fishing is called stilt fishing. This is practice that can be seen along the entire souther coastal belt of Sri Lanka (including Unawatuna). However, I tend to think this is somewhere near Ahangama or Midigama since that is the area you can find this many stilt fishermen in a single place.

thank you very much Anuja
And thanks for the info – thinking about it it was probably Ahangama (after checking on a map of Sri Lanka). thanks!
