Sailing in the Straits

Sailing in the Straits

Looking towards Bonifacio, Corsica.

Taken from the Santa Teresa di Gallura (Sardinia- Itsly)) to Bonifacio (Corsica- France) ferry, crossing the Straits of Bonifacio.

Oh, how much I could say randomly about this! The town is Bonifacio, perched on a ridge of cliffs with the straits on one side and the natural harbour on the other (the entrance is to the left of the picture.)
It’s an amazingly beautiful town, looking out over the straits towards Sardinia. I’ll say more about Bonifacio in the description of another image- one actually taken in the town.

An astonishing number of yachts and other boats were constantly entering and leaving the town, but they were dinghies compared to this beautiful thing! It sailed close enough to the ferry to get a good shot… But WHAT A YACHT!
It set me thinking about Bonifacio’s history (no kidding, it actually did…)
At one stage the boats leaving Bonifacio would have all been wonderful tall ships, before the age of four tiered super-yachts and 200hp powerboats. This boat was just a call back- albeit modern- to when truly beautiful ships, ships that didn’t use engines, just the wind, would cross these straits- just as this one is doing. I’ve rambled on a bit here, but it is such a wonderful boat, and such a wonderful setting to sail it in- it made even the 70-ft super yacht in the harbour seem obsolete- nothing compared to the grace and flair of the pristine, beautiful sails filled by the wind.

If you read this far, well done and thanks.

Wonderful shot, perfectly captured. so clear, and i love the way the boat is just there on the edge of the picture.omg? you were thinking about history? (jokes) that’s not allowed in holidays! Ships were once really beautiful weren’t they? it must have been so much nicer when they were all awesome and sailful

A fantastic composition! I love the angle of the yacht, the rich colours and the intricate detail of the city. Just wonderful…
