The ruins of Whalley Abbey are found in the grounds of the Retreat and Conference House of the Diocese of Blackburn in Whalley, Lancashire. The House was built after the Dissolution and destruction of the Abbey in the 16th and 17th centuries. Entrance is by admission only, but my wife and I took a wrong turning out of the carpark and found ourselves amongst the ruins! I did a couple of quick sketches and took some photos before hastily retreating! This piece was worked up from one of the sketches. Pen and ink, ink wash, wax resist and oil pastel on acrylic gesso-primed watercolour paper.
