The Couta Boats are a classic vessel originally used for fishing on the Victorian coast from the 1870s through until WW2.

To obtain the best prices for their catch, the fishermen had to be first back to port after filling their quota. So, as well as being a good fishing vessel and load-carrier, the Couta Boats had to be nimble and fast under sail.

They also had to take on some of Australia’s most treacherous waters through The Rip and Bass Strait, and bring crew and catch back safely.

Now these distinctive little boats zip around Port Phillip Bay in highly competitive races, giving a classic look to sport on the water.
