i absolutely love butterflies but there not easy to photograph they dont often stay still for long so this is a great shot ive heard that they only live for 24 hours but I can tell you that this is not true when i was a little girl I found one whos wings had not opened properly on a bush in my paddock so i put out my finger and he never climbed off i took him to school and he didnt leave me for months i kept him on an orchid plant and fed him honey and water off a spoon and picked fowers for him to feed off it was amazing to watch him unroll his tongue? and drink , I awoke one day to find only his wings ,i think he was eaten by a mouse or something ,I was devastated and cried like I lost my best friend, i still often think of my “buddy” and the amazing relationship i shared with an insect.
R.I.P “BUDDY” Hope your fluttering through an eternal blue sky .
just thought id share that ,still brings tears to my eyes
rachelle
thanks for informing me the’ tongue’ is the proboscis

very pretty
Carmen Mandel-...
Thank you Rachelle for your compliments and for sharing your story. The bond you describe is incredibly beautiful. I am pretty sure that she is fluttering in an eternal blue sky … My child and I have recently reared up three beautiful Painted Ladies. Then, we released them in our forest—amidst a sea of tears from my eyes …
As you love butterflies, if you wish go to my main page and enter my Blog Posts, entry Nature Journal . Within the post paragraph click the link Nature Photojournal to access it. In the post Fragile Beauty, I describe my encounter with a Monarch butterfly at home.

Dave Sandersfeld
Incredible capture. Detail, color and dimension and the host plant too!
I find it mind boggling that every “pollinator” pollinates a specific plant on Earth. For example, grazing animals have overgrazed the Blue Lupines here in Oregon and the lovely, quaint Blue Lupine butterfly is nearly extinct. I advocate locals place Blue Lupines in their gardens and the small, sky blue butterfly is slowly coming back in the City!
Holly Werner
Stunning shot.
Carmen Mandel-...
Thank you so much, Holly.
Ellen

Carmen Mandel-...
Thank you, Ellen, for your lovely comment.
LocoCow
I can barely get my dog and chidreb to sit still long enough to get a decent shot and here you get a butterfly to not only sit still but pose for you…. Wonderfu piece of art.
Carmen Mandel-...
Thank you, LocoCow, for leaving a comment. Well, she was busy feeding, “busy” in butterfly-time, so I had to shoot at lightning speed. And here it is, the miracle of her sheer beauty.
