Being from South Africa, the last thing that I expected at sunrise, walking along Beach Number 7 on Havelock Island in the Indian Andaman Islands, was to meet an Indian Elephant, taking a bath in the ocean.
This is Rajan – a bit of a celebrity around these parts. Apparently, he was brought onto the island for a film and at the end of it, the producers ran out of money and were not able to afford to get him back to where he came from. The owners of the Barefoot Resort, where we were staying, decided to buy him and retire him.
He is pretty old, but seems really happy. He lives a gentle life with his handler, coming down to the beach for every morning for his bath.

Very unusual photo Clive… Love the play of light on the pink skin tones.
Thanks Vickie. At first I thought he was sunburnt, but the pink is just the way he is!

wonderful shot clive, beautifully processed … glad to read rajan is retired and happy … can’t help thinking he’d be a bit lonely but the bond with handlers is pretty strong I believe
Yes the bond is really strong and I think that Rajan lives a pretty happy and stressless life. He is a really lovely, gentle animal. Thanks for popping in.
