These large swells are generated as strong currents enter through the “Rip” at the mouth of Port Phillip Bay from Bass Strait. The “Rip” is known by seafarers world wide as one of the most notorious stretches of water in the world, due to very strong currents that come up from the southern ocean, pass around both sides of Tasmania and meet at the “Rip”, huge swells, along with a narrow channel, and a deep underwater ravine, which was once the mouth of the Yarra River.
